Stiffs still searching for those elusive points
ER County League Premier Division
Easington Utd Reserves 0 - 2 Beverley Town Reserves
DESPITE another performance not lacking in endeavour, the Eastenders Reserves emerged from yet another Premier Division fixture with nothing to show for their efforts.
A goal in each half from Andy Stott gave opponents Beverley a deserved success and with it a return to the top of the table.
Buoyed by an impressive win in the cup last time out, the locals came into the match showing two changes to the starting line-up that had thumped Long Riston.
Goalkeeper Kevin Appleyard came in for his first action since early October and Adam Metcalf replaced the absent Jamie Hollingsworth at left back. Meanwhile, new signing Adam Jamieson took his place alongside James Mee and returning asst-boss Darren Dawson on the bench.
The game started in near perfect conditions, although the breeze continued to strengthen as play progressed and the pitch was understandably a touch on the soft side.
A tight opening saw the Eastenders immediately placed on the back foot although with few real alarms until the quarter-hour mark when the aforementioned Stott passed up a great chance, opting to shoot with his favoured left foot and sending the ball across goal when he should really have scored.
Four minutes later, McLaughlin’s misplaced pass gave Town an opening on the left which culminated in Appleyard’s tremendous flying save from Stott’s close-range volley.
Despite fine passages of play, Easington created little of note up to half-time, aside from Tennyson’s speculative volley and McLaughlin’s strong run, culminating in a left foot shot that was always going away.
But just as it appeared they had done enough at the other end to preserve parity, Stott was allowed to advance from deep and plant a fine shot inside Appleyard’s left-hand post for 0-1.
Town seemed keen to kill things off early in the second half and on 50mins they were almost gifted a second when Foster’s weak back-pass was intercepted but Appleyard stood up well to save. The resulting corner was hacked off the line by Metcalf before Appleyard was called upon again to produce two quite stunning saves in quick succession.
Having weathered this storm, Easington now enjoyed their best passage of play. And with a touch more fortune they could well have levelled matters.
On 61mins, Town keeper Craig Martin failed to collect Foster’s angled free-kick, under pressure from Rice, and when the ball was fed across the box, McLaughlin’s volley found the side netting.
Shortly afterwards, Rice made way for Mee with the youngster’s pace immediately causing problems for the hitherto solid looking Beverley rearguard. And on 71mins, he appeared to have earned the hosts a penalty when only Neil Silvester’s rash challenge halted his run on goal, seemingly inside the box. Referee Butler ruled otherwise and Hutchinson’s resulting free-kick just cleared the Town bar.
Five minutes later Barnett’s good run and cross was only half-cleared to Hutchinson but the youngster’s firmly struck volley was straight at the keeper.
Jamieson replaced Findley for his first taste of County League football immediately afterwards but within two minutes the game was lost, the locals failing to clear their lines and an unsighted Appleyard being powerless to prevent Stott’s shot making it 0-2.
To their credit, even now the locals’ heads didn’t drop and only a fine stop from Martin kept out another stinging Hutchinson volley.
Easington: Appleyard, Findley (Jamieson, 77), Metcalf, Hutchinson, Fisk, Foster, Rice (Mee, 65), McLaughlin, Tennyson, Page, Barnett (Sub: Dawson)
