Kev's couple caps Casuals comeback
ER County League Division 4
Easington Utd Casuals 3 - 3 Molescroft Rangers Reserves
A STORMING second half rally saw the Eastenders Casuals rescue a point at home to Molescroft in Division 4. Trailing 0-3 at half-time, the Casuals took advantage of the conditions afterwards to salvage things thanks to Kevin Newsam's late leveller.
Earlier Rich Clubley had set the wheels of recovery in motion when racing clear to score the first. Newsam then applied the finishing touch after sub Danny Medforth had opened up the Rangers defence down the right, and the same player snatched a point for the locals in the last minute courtesy of a fine right foot shot after another sub, Stuart Campbell, had teed up the chance.
Hoping to retain the side that had battled so well against Viking Raiders, ‘Maccer’ lost Pasha Brown and ‘Nibs’ Carrick beforehand. Thus Medforth and Campbell were drafted in to join new boy Feeney on the bench.
With the wind far more noticeable on “The Pitch Across The Ditch” than on the main arena, Molescroft took full advantage to build what should have been a match-winning half-time advantage.
A springing of the Casuals’ “offside trap”, a goalmouth scramble and a wind-assisted free-kick saw Steve Eldon beaten three times before the break. Not that it was all one-way traffic – Danny Campbell headed just over while Dave Turley rattled the woodwork with a well-struck free-kick.
The second half saw Easington look to make the same use of what benefit the conditions provided but it wasn’t until Clubley was sent clear on 65mins that they finally sensed a comeback.
To their credit, despite continually being thwarted by either a poor final ball or a defender’s often desperate intervention, the locals never gave up in their pursuit of a point and their reward eventually came…even if they did leave things a little on the late side!
Casuals: Eldon, D Rutter, T Biglin, A McNaught, I McNaught, D Campbell, Ward (Medforth, 60), Turley (Feeney, 70), R Clubley, Milbank (S Campbell, 80), Newsam
