Apologies - this should have been posted on here last week
Holderness Advertiser 30th July
DESPITE tasting defeat for a second time this pre-season, Easington United assistant-manager Dave Walmsley was encouraged by his side’s performance against a Sheffield FC XI at Low Farm.
The Eastenders lost 3-1 with new signing Ben Holtby scoring ten minutes from time. Earlier Danny McKenzie, Baba Eskante and skipper Andy Taylor had established a three-goal lead for Sheffield, with visiting goalkeeper James Sayles also saving a Danny Medforth penalty just three minutes into the second half.
Walmsley, though, was satisfied with the overall quality of his team’s performance. He said, “it was good to see our passing game come to the fore more this week and we were also to move people about in a more positive fashion rather than being forced to by circumstances. I’m also pretty confident we won’t come up against fitter opponents all season than the side we played today”.
Sheffield’s squad was a mixture of reservists from their UniBond League squad, U19s and trialists. Meanwhile included in the home ranks were the returning Kevin Milner and Gavin Thurkettle, as well as young goalkeeping recruit Danny Cable who replaced Kevin Appleyard at half-time.
Prior to kick-off, Easington skipper Neil Rutter received a beautiful silver salver presented by “The World’s Oldest Football Club” to commemorate their visit which, originally, had been intended to mark both clubs’ anniversary years and the completion of the upgrade of Low Farm to FA Step 7 level.
Easington’s next outing is against the ERCFA Juniors squad on Thursday, 7 August.
