Casuals enjoy successful debut
South Holderness Cup Round One
Easington Utd Casuals 2 – 0 Paull Wanderers
The Eastenders Casuals (this year’s ‘B’-squad representatives of the Club in the South Holderness Cup) enjoyed a successful debut as first half goals from Andy Milbank and David Clubley helped them progress past Amateur League side Paull Wanderers on the “Pitch Across the Ditch”.
Playing with the wind at their backs before the break, the Casuals had the ball in the net after just 5 minutes, only for Milbank’s “goal” to be disallowed for a foul on the visiting keeper.
Soon afterwards Iain McNaught hit the top of the bar from a corner and before too long the hosts’ pressure finally told, courtesy of a quality goal from the impressive Milbank. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, he held it well before turning his man and floating a fine shot into the top left corner.
It should have been 2-0 virtually straight away, following an almighty goal mouth scramble, in which Chris Smith (twice) and Milbank both saw shots cleared from the line.
The second goal eventually arrived from the penalty spot, following a handball in the box after another scramble; Clubley confidently dispatching it for 2-0.
Despite his side’s dominance, stand-in manager Mike Wilson didn’t feel his side played particularly well with the elements in their favour. And their opponents caused a few problems, mainly through Easington’s own defensive mistakes, and the occasional long shot.
As expected, Paull exerted more pressure after the break but the result never really looked in doubt. The Casuals were indebted to a strong defensive quartet (“mature performance from the Dad’s Army lads”) backed up by a confident display from goalkeeper Eldon. They were also helped by the Paull tactics, which proved meat and drink to the home rearguard.
At the other end Dave Clubley twice passed up good chances to make things safe – first after good work down the left from Kevin Newsam who crossed only to see Clubley screw his volley wide at the far post. The second came via a free header at the far post, after a good cross from Milbank.
No matter, the win was confirmed much to the locals’ delight, none more so than John Clarke – a run to the semi-finals would help him reach 650 appearances for Easington United!!!??!
Casuals: S Eldon, S Cousins, T Biglin, A McNaught, I McNaught, J Clarke, M Findley (M Hooley), C Smith (P Brown), A Milbank, D Clubley, K Newsam
