Holderness Advertiser 9th January
FEBRUARY’S East Riding Senior Cup quarter-final against Beverley Town would appear to have become Easington United’s biggest game of the season, following defeat to Sculcoates Amateurs in the Humber Premier League.
In a game they could simply not afford to lose if they were to maintain their outside hopes of a first ever HPL title, the Eastenders took the lead through Ollie Musgrove on 53 minutes only to eventually go down by three goals to one.
Substitute Mark Fordham netted twice for Sculcoates with Danny Drayton also on target as the reigning champions scored three times in the last quarter.
Not for the first time this season, Easington manager Dave Mackay-Dundas was left ruing lapses in concentration. He said, “I can’t fault my lads for their effort or overall level of performance but once again the difference between genuine title contenders and those just below has been the number of mistakes you make and how you punish them”.
The result leaves United some 14pts off the leaders and, although they have games in hand on several teams above them, it would take an improbable run of results to now see them figuring in the final shake-up.
However, with places for the aforementioned cup quarter-final up for grabs, the forthcoming fixtures retain importance, beginning at Barton Town on Saturday where Kevin Milner and John Batch could return after illness ruled both out last week.
On the down side, Luke Jeffery is on ERCFA Representative duty, Dan Potts misses out following a minor knee operation and Craig Smalley is extremely doubtful having sustained injury against Sculcoates.

CLUB NOTES
Despite defeat last week, Manager Mack is keen to stress to his players how much they still have to play for this season, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Barton Town OB Reserves. Not least, of course, are the places up for grabs for the ER Senior Cup quarter-final against Beverley Town, set for 9 February. With Luke Jeffery away on ERCFA Rep duty, Dan Potts now sidelined for 2-4 weeks following a knee operation and Craig Smalley doubtful through injury, several players should therefore get a chance to shine at The Euronics Ground. Kevin Milner and John Batch should both come into contention if recovered from illness.
After two weeks’ inactivity, the Reserves are set to resume action in the County League Premier Division on Saturday when they entertain Viking Raiders. Goalkeeper Craig Pickersgill is looking to return after injury and Mike Wilson will also see whether Luke Smith, Chris Senior and Mike Hooley are also available again.
The Casuals saw a second successive match wiped out by overnight rain last weekend. They are set to entertain Eastrington Village at Low Farm on Saturday in Division 4 with Doug Clubley set to welcome back skipper Trevor Biglin after holiday.
Thanks to Carol, Bob & Laura at ‘Zest For Living’ for their kind sponsorship of last Saturday’s HPL fixture. The winning Golden Goal time was 53 minutes.
The Junior Football Academy should resume this Saturday (10-11.30am) but this will depend on the state of the Low Farm pitch. Please check with Daniel on 07703 517525 beforehand.
