Holderness Advertiser 2nd January 2008
EASINGTON United ended 2007 on a high thanks to a hard-fought win over Withernsea in the Holderness Derby at Low Farm. In a wind-affected contest, Mike Nicholson’s 25th minute goal proved crucial as The Eastenders extended their unbeaten run against their local rivals to nineteen matches, a sequence stretching back to August 1999.
The visitors were left feeling bitterly disappointed by the result and with some justification, having more than matched their hosts as well as having two penalty claims turned down. The second of which, in the final minute, appeared particularly strong.
In a game of few real chances, Danny Medforth passed up a great chance to settle matters for Easington in the second half. Nicholson, Jon-Paul Johnson and Dan Potts also went close for the hosts, while skipper Neil Rutter had a second half ‘goal’ chalked off for offside.
At the other end, Chris Frost saw a shot cleared off the line, Chris Hardcastle drilled one good chance wide and Mark Wilson was denied by a fine save from Easington goalkeeper Kevin Appleyard.
The win lifted The Eastenders up to sixth in the Humber Premier League table and back in the mix of clubs vying for pole position. To remain in contention, however, they must beat reigning champions Sculcoates Amateurs at Low Farm this Saturday.
Manager Dave Mackay-Dundas knows that to do so his side must perform better. He does at least have options to change things, following the recent return to action of Jamie Cousins, Craig Smalley, Steve Harrod and Andy Graham, all of whom were on the bench against Withernsea. In addition, Jimmy Neilson should return this weekend having been away for the ‘Derby’.
There is again no game for the Reserves in the County League Premier Division this Saturday but in Division 4 the Casuals will hope to return to action after last week’s game against Brandesburton Thirds was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. They make the short trip to Withernsea Thirds.

CLUB NOTES
The First Team entertain reigning HPL champions Sculcoates Amateurs at Low Farm this Saturday with Jimmy Neilson a likely addition to the squad on duty for the Derby. The Reserves are again without a fixture but the Casuals – whose match with Brandesburton 3rds last week was postponed due to a waterlogged “Pitch Across The Ditch” – are set to be in action; they make the short trip to Withernsea 3rds.
The Draw for the ER Senior Cup quarter-finals has paired Easington United with Beverley Town. The tie is set for Saturday 9 February at Low Farm. In the ER Senior Country Cup the Reserves entertain Malton & Norton on Saturday 2 February.
Thanks to Mike Wilson Butcher for his kind sponsorship of Saturday’s HPL fixture. The winning Golden Goal time was 25 minutes.
