TWO Malet Lambert ‘old boys’ returned to their old stamping ground and combined to send Easington United through to the quarter-finals of the East Riding Senior Cup.
Steve Harrod – who joined The Eastenders from the east Hull club – proved a thorn in his former team mates’ side all afternoon and it was from his artistry that ‘ex-pupil’ Jon Paul Johnson dived to head home the game’s only goal on 37 minutes.
As home manager Alf Warvill acknowledged afterwards, Easington deserved their win. It was only their second in the last five outings, the most recent also having come away by a 1-0 scoreline in the same competition.
The Eastenders can now look forward to December’s draw with a real chance of matching their previous best run the competition, which came via appearances in the semi-finals in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Of more pressing concern to manager Dave Mackay-Dundas, however, will be the search for much-needed league points. This resumes at Hornsea Town on Saturday – scene of the previous win in the ER Senior Cup – with the boss having several injury concerns following the weekend’s win.
Mike Nicholson (dead leg), Jamie Cousins (groin) and Craig Smalley (ankle / knee) all picked up knocks at Malet Lambert, while Ollie Musgrove is away and Andy Graham is not expected to be back after missing out last week.
To complete a good day on the field, Easington United Reserves completed a first league ‘double’ of the season on Saturday. Goals from Darren Dawson (2), Adam Metcalf, Anthony Barnett and a Craig Foster penalty completed a 5-3 win for the Eastenders against Holme Rovers.

CLUB NOTES
The First Team go to Hornsea Town on Saturday hoping to build on their win at Malet and return to winning ways in the Humber Premier League. Last month a Jimmy Neilson strike proved sufficient to earn Easington an ER Senior Cup win at the Hollis Rec and Manager Mack will undoubtedly settle for a similar outcome this time round. He has injury doubts over Nicholson (dead leg), Cousins (groin) and Smalley (ankle / knee) while Ollie Musgrove and Andy Graham are both absent.
The Reserves entertain Division 1 side Wawne Ferry in the County League Senior Cup hoping to continue their fine recent form. Darren Thompson and Chris Senior could both return for the Stiffs who, with Manager Wilson away, will be under the stewardship of Craig Foster and John Clarke.
After a weekend off the Casuals return to action with a trip to Division 5 side Gilberdyke Reserves in the Harold Robinson Cup.
The Fun Junior Football Sessions continue at Low Farm this Saturday (10am). Any boy or girl aged 12 and under is welcome.
