MISTAKES proved costly as Easington United exited the HPL Grays League Cup at the first round stage, courtesy of a 0-3 defeat by last year’s beaten finalists Smith & Nephew.
Having adapted well to the league leaders’ 3G playing surface at Hull University to the extent that they dominated the first half, Easington were undone by goals in the 57th and 65th minutes, both of which came from poor defending; Chris Humphries and Mike Smith the home side’s beneficiaries.
A third goal from Joe Addinall completed the hosts’ victory five minutes later in a very one-sided second half.
Eastenders boss Dave Mackay-Dundas refused to be too downbeat at the close. He said, “Once again we’ve paid for occasional lapses in concentration and that’s the biggest disappointment; we’re not learning from the same mistakes. Still, it’s only our second defeat of the season and the most important thing is that we return to winning ways in the league this week.”
Easington travel to Pocklington Town in the Humber Premier League on Saturday knowing a win could take them back to the top of the table. Both Andy Graham and Steve Harrod picked up knocks at Smiths, while Kevin Milner and Ollie Musgrove are available for selection again after missing out last weekend.
The Eastenders Reserves entertain Howden Amateurs in the County League Premier Division desperate to arrest a run of three successive home defeats, the latest of which came against Skidby last Saturday.
In Division 4 the Casuals make the short trip to Hedon Rangers Reserves.

CLUB NOTES
The Eastenders return to Humber Premier League business this weekend when they go to The Balk to meet Pocklington Town. Traditionally one of the locals’ happier hunting grounds, defeat there last season signalled the start of the team’s slump in fortunes. Manager Mack will hope for the opposite effect this time around. Steve Harrod and Andy Graham both picked up knocks on Saturday but are hopeful of being fit, while the availability of Kevin Milner and Ollie Musgrove provides the boss with some welcome left-sided options.
In Mike Wilson’s continued absence, Reserves duo Foster and Clarke hope to build on their team’s improved performances (if not results!) as they look to break their home “duck” against Howden Amateurs this weekend. Any surplus of players from the senior ranks would provide some welcome extra competition for places.
The Casuals face a local derby against high-flying Hedon Rangers Reserves in County League Division 4. Steve Ward and Chris Smith are both absent but ‘The Chairman’ hopes to have Ricky Biglin, Sam Broom, Kevin Newsam and ‘Nibs’ Carrick all available for selection.
