Holderness Advertiser 3rd October
MIKE Nicholson’s stunning goal eight minutes from time enabled Easington United to beat Smith & Nephew 2-1 and leapfrog their opponents back to the top of the Humber Premier League.
Nicholson’s brilliant left foot volley from the edge of the box gave the Eastenders the edge in a game that, despite the lack of clear cut chances, kept the spectators enthralled throughout.
Kevin Milner had given Easington the lead after just 5 minutes, seizing on a mistake by Andy Raynor to score from close range.
The visitors hit back to level matters just before the break when Joe Addinall headed home at the far post and they probably the best of the few chances on offer afterwards. Nathan Nuttall, in particular, will feel he should have done better on two occasions. As it was, the home side held their nerve to clinch all three points.
The win was Easington’s fifth in a row at home this season and manager Dave Mackay-Dundas will hope for similar form on the road in view of a fixture list that now sees four successive away games.
October is traditionally a poor month for the Eastenders and a trip to reigning champions Sculcoates on Saturday is a stern test of whether this trend can be reversed.
Stuart Campbell limped out of the action during the first half on Saturday and is a major doubt for the trip. However, top scorer Steve Harrod should return and the presence of both Danny Medforth and Jimmy Neilson on the bench last week means there is increased competition for places.

CLUB NOTES
The First Team begin a sequence of four successive away games this Saturday when they travel to meet reigning champions Sculcoates Amateurs at Hull & ER Sports Ground on Chants Ave. The hosts have moved into third place having recovered from a shaky start and the venue saw Easington embarrassed twice last season. Manager Mack will be without Stu Campbell (who has since had his injury diagnosed as a broken ankle – best wishes for a speedy recovery go from everybody at the Club). In addition John Batch, Mike Nicholson and Danny Medforth are all carrying knocks, while Steve Harrod’s anticipated return could depend on the reliability of his holiday flight home!
In contrast to the senior squad, the Eastenders Reserves now embark on four home games in a row in the ER County League Premier Division. Similar to their first team counterparts they also face the reigning champions; AFC Charter making the trip to Low Farm that was originally scheduled for the opening day. Mike Wilson and assts Foster & Clarke will await Mack’s selection plans with interest as well as finding out whether Luke Jeffery is anywhere near a return following the knee injury that prevented his participation against Sculcoates.
The Casuals are at Humbleton where they meet Molescroft Rangers Reserves. Chairman Clubley is left waiting on his two injuries from last week, while Chris Smith will be hoping for a run having manfully stepped into the void left by no referee last weekend.
Thanks to Easington Village Stores & Post Office (R.H. Webster & Co) for their sponsorship of Saturday’s HPL match. The winning Golden Goal time was 5 minutes and was won by Judy Sugden.
Finally, congratulations to Daniel Campbell whose recent School-Club Link Programme at Easington CE School has been adopted as the ER County Football Association’s model of good practice for use with next season’s programme. The accolade will hopefully encourage more youngsters to get involved when Daniel resumes the Programme at Patrington CE School later this month. In the meantime, his regular Saturday morning sessions continue at Low Farm (10am-11.30am).
