EASINGTON United maintained their early leadership of the HPL Premier Division thanks to back-to-back home wins last week.
The Eastenders edged out local rivals Hedon Rangers 2-1 in midweek before completing a 3-2 win over Westella & Willerby at the weekend. Both games saw the hosts put themselves in a seemingly unassailable position only to allow their opponents a way back into the game.
First half goals from Steve Harrod and Mike Nicholson put Easington on course for victory against Hedon and the game should really have been out of sight before substitute Jonathan Sutton scored a cracker for the visitors to set up a tense last quarter.
On Saturday it was Paul Wilkinson’s turn for ‘goal of the game’, the striker hitting a ‘snorter’ from 20 yards to break the deadlock in the 43rd minute.
When Steve Harrod then scored twice, inside three minutes, early in the second half the game looked won. But goals from Matt Fyvie (68mins) and Mike Bartlett (81mins) for Westella ensured a nail-biting last few minutes.
Easington’s win was their fourth in five matches but they face a real test of their unbeaten start on Saturday at Hutton Cranswick United. Rotsea Lane is not the happiest of hunting grounds for the Eastenders and last weekend their hosts emphatically halted Malet Lambert’s unbeaten start with a 6-1 victory at the same ground.
Manager Dave Mackay-Dundas has slight injury doubts over Paul Wilkinson (hamstring) and Stuart Campbell (ribs) but otherwise will be looking to retain the same squad that beat Westella. If so this should leave the Reserves a strong-looking line-up for their County League Premier Division opener at home to reigning champions AFC Charter.

CLUB NOTES
The Eastenders go to Hutton Cranswick United on Saturday. Rotsea Lane has not been one of their happier hunting grounds in recent years and a trip at a similar stage last season saw their unbeaten start to the campaign ended by their hosts; let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself! At time of going to print, John Batch (honeymoon) is the only certain absentee but Paul Wilkinson (hamstring), Stuart Campbell (knee) and Danny Medforth (ankle/hamstring) are all doubts.
The Reserves begin their league campaign in the ER County League Premier Division this Saturday when they entertain reigning champions AFC Charter (Old George). After Dooley Cousins’ stewardship during pre-season, the Stiffs are under the management of Mike Wilson, John Clarke and Craig Foster for their opening encounter, with the nature of last season’s affairs at ‘The Farm’ hopefully ensuring there’ll be a healthy amount of support present for the locals (Kick-off 2.00pm). Meanwhile our thanks go to Dooley for his work with the reserves over the summer.
Thanks to The Neptune Inn for their kind sponsorship of Saturday’s game. The Committee would also like to thank G.R.D. Engineering for their recent kind sponsorship. It is greatly appreciated. The winning Golden Goal time was 43 minutes and remains to be claimed.
The winners of the August Draw of the Eastenders 100 Club were as follows: £25 – 97: Hilary Wilson; £15 – 44: Linda Hepworth, £10 – 123: Mike Hooley; £5 – 54: Kevin Appleyard; £5 – 25: Judy Sugden.
Fun Junior Coaching sessions continue at Low Farm this Saturday (10am) and on Wednesday (6.30pm).
