Soggy summer disrupts date with Desford
EASINGTON United’s opening pre-season friendly against Leicester & District League side Desford FC, scheduled for this Saturday, is in doubt following the latest heavy rainfall.
The persistent downpours of last Friday and Saturday not only left parts of the Low Farm pitch under water and seriously disrupted the ongoing work to repair the Farm End goalmouth; it also left the Committee with no option but to rule out any football there this weekend.
With the visitors having already sorted out accommodation for the trip, at time of going to print arrangements for an alternative venue for the match are desperately being sought.
Should this be achieved, manager Mack has problems on the field as well with the Eastenders coming into the game with a string of absentees. John Batch and Steve Harrod are both away on a stag weekend; Kevin Milner, Craig Smalley, Ollie Musgrove and Luke Jeffery are all on holiday, while Mike Nicholson and asst-boss Dave Walmsley are both working.
Still, such a high number of absentees lead to chances for others against a team the locals demolished 6-1 in last year’s corresponding fixture. Among those in contention for a place is Tony Hunt, the former East Riding Rep skipper having returned from former club Reckitts for a second spell at Low Farm. Along with the welcome return of Jimmy Neilson, the unexpected availability of Stuart Campbell and a clutch of new young hopefuls down training in recent weeks, Hunt’s return should increase competition for places as both the senior squad and the Reserves aim for better things this term.
Any players interested in joining the Club are invited to the weekly training sessions, which currently take place every Monday (6.30pm). Following the latest weather problems, last week’s session was moved to Easington beach on Monday night, something the players found very enjoyable – if somewhat testing!
With the wet conditions having already claimed the scalp of Desford at Low Farm, the Committee will be watching the forecast anxiously ahead of the forthcoming School-club Link Football Festival and visit of Hull City Juniors on Friday week (3 Aug). Meanwhile, pre-season games have also been arranged for the Club’s County League squad, beginning with the visit of HPL Division 1 side Brandesburton to Low Farm on Tuesday, 8 August, followed by a trip to Hedon United on Tuesday, 14 August in the annual Melvin Douglas Memorial Trophy. Other games pencilled in are Aldbrough (away, 24 Aug) and Roos in the annual Barney Moverley Memorial game (home, 30 Aug).
One section of the Club seemingly unaffected by the recent weather has been Danny Campbell’s “Youth Development” squad; last week they entered a team in the “Mixed Under-10s” group at the McDonald’s Football Festival for Charter Standard Clubs at Hull University. The Easington squad – Jake Sowerby, Jack Hill, Will Hobson, Chloe Mullet, Ashley Chapman, Lucy Biglin, Jordan Sizer & Jacob Herrington – beat Driffield Girls 8-0 before losing out to Beverley Town (0-1) and Withernsea (0-3). Danny said, “A very good day was had by all the players and in between games the boys and girls were practicing their skills on Football specific inflatables, including shooting and dribbling. All the players should feel very proud of themselves putting in some big-hearted performances throughout the day; there’s definitely something to build on for the future”.
After the final game all the players were presented with a “goody bag” and certificate from the former England, Manchester United and Nottingham Forrest defender, Viv Anderson. Danny would like to thank his assistants, Andy Graham and Pasha Brown, as well as all the mums, dads, brothers and sisters who made the trip to a wet North Hull in the seven-car convoy. Parents/Guardians and children are reminded that the normal Saturday sessions for boys & girls aged 12 or under resume this week at Low Farm (10am) – all new faces welcome.
Finally, the soggy summer of 2007 could well have claimed another victim, with the organisers of this Saturday’s “Easington, Kilnsea & Spurn Charity 5-A-Side Football Competition” also looking for a new venue after water-logging at first-choice Sunny Cliff Farm, Kilnsea. Should they succeed in doing so, the Eastenders are set to have two teams participating in the event, which is set to start at 1.00pm with an evening Quiz & a Raffle at The Crown & Anchor. Proceeds from the day will be split between the Club, the RNLI, East End Cancer Relief and Spurn Bird Observatory.
