THERE is no such thing as a “Close Season” for Daniel Campbell. Not only is he into his third week’s training with his Easington United team-mates but he’s also spent the past four months trying to ensure the next crop of players are on their way.
26-year-old Danny, a CRB-checked Level 1 Coach, has been working with a small group of youngsters at Easington’s Low Farm Recreation Ground as part of a drive to introduce mini-soccer to the Club; in addition, he is also currently involved after hours at the local village school as part of the School-Club Link programme, set up in association with the East Riding County FA.
The success of the latest scheme has surprised everyone connected with the Club. General manager Richard Lusmore said, “Danny has had thirty-plus kids down some weeks, which is exceptional given the size of the school itself. This has since led to more coming down to the Saturday sessions, which previously had suffered due to rival attractions on a weekend.”
The highlight of the School-Club Link will come on Friday, 3 August when the youngsters stage a “Festival” prior to the friendly between Easington United’s Humber Premier League side and Hull City Juniors. With BBC Radio Humberside looking into broadcasting their nightly Sports Talk show from the ground, it promises to be an exciting day for Danny’s class.
Before then the budding Young Eastenders appear in their first tournament this Saturday, when a mixed Under-10’s team takes part in the McDonald’s Football Festival for FA Charter Standard Clubs at Hull University.

CLOSE season, what close season? For Daniel Campbell, there has been no such thing in 2007. Not only is he currently into his third week’s training with his Easington United team-mates but he’s also spent the past four months trying to ensure the next crop of players are on their way.

It’s a scheme Danny hopes to continue in September at Patrington School.

With other local clubs already having a much bigger set-up in place, both Campbell and the rest of the Eastenders’ Development Sub-committee (Lusmore, Dan Potts and Andrew Graham) know they face an uphill struggle to repeat the success of the previous two junior teams at the Club, both which saw several players graduate into the open-age ranks. However, as Lusmore says, that’s missing the point: “Ideally we would like to have several groups of youngsters who progress with the Club right through to the seniors but in a place the size of Easington that isn’t going to happen. What our sub-committee is trying to ensure is that even if these kids can’t get a game with us at a particular age level, we can at least point them in the right direction elsewhere in the area. It’s the fact they actually want to play, not who they want to play for that matters most now.”
Meanwhile, the Eastenders’ preparations for the new season are already in full swing – despite the un-seasonal weather! With Tom Robinson temporarily out of “retirement” to lend a hand, work has been going on in recent weeks to ensure the ground is ready for the new season.
In addition to the pitch itself, much needed repair work has been done in the visitors’ changing room where a whole wall had to be replaced following damage last season; the Committee would like to thank Jeff Sugden for his sterling efforts on that job. While her husband was occupied with that task, club secretary Judy has been busy “gutting” the Tea Hut, “spring cleaning” the Changing Rooms and “gardening” around the dugouts and building areas, while son ‘Fozzy’ is currently tending to overdue repair work in the Farm End goalmouth. With more tidying-up work on the field and car park due to take place over the next couple of weeks, as well as repairs to the bridge between the two pitches (damaged by the recent floods) the Committee, along with the local Recreation & Sports Association, are facing a race against time to have the ground ship-shape in time for the first pre-season game against Leicester side Desford FC on Saturday week (28th).
On the field of play, John Batch, Steve Harrod and Kevin Milner – all summer targets for other HPL clubs – have registered for the coming campaign as has Jimmy Neilson, back training after over a year out of action with injury. The Club have also held on to youngsters Luke Jeffery and Tom McLaughlin despite interest from North Ferriby who have faced the loss of the bulk of their Reserve side to newly-formed Scarborough Athletic.
With a couple of new faces down in the first two weeks, it’s hoped that the Eastenders can build on the ‘feel-good factor’ generated by the recent Diamond Celebration Event. Following the games against Desford and Hull City, the first team squad face HPL Division 1 newcomers Hessle Sporting Club away (Thursday, 9th Aug) before rounding off their preparations in the inaugural ‘Holderness Cup Winners Cup’ fixture against Hornsea Town at North Frodingham on Monday, 13th August.
Pre-season games for the Club’s County League squads are currently being arranged. For up-to-date details of these and other news, please check out the Message Board on the Eastenders web site at: www.easington-united.co.uk
