Stiffs stuffed
Sculcoates Amateurs Reserves 6 – 1 Easington United Reserves
THE Reserves’ first season in the County League top flight ended in disappointing fashion, courtesy of an emphatic defeat at fellow strugglers Sculcoates Amateurs. However, given that Holme Rovers, Reckitts Reserves and FC Ridings were already consigned to finishing below the locals, in the event the result was somewhat overshadowed by injuries to Adam Metcalf and assistant-manager ‘Biff’ McNaught, both which required hospital treatment.
Thankfully, neither turned out quite as bad as first feared, Metcalf suffering severe bruising rather than a fracture of the shinbone, McNaught requiring six stitches in a facial wound following a stray Sculcoates elbow early in the second half.
With manager John Clarke ruled out by work commitments, First Team boss Dave Mack stepped in to help out and, along with fellow “late recruit” Ollie Musgrove, was required to put in a lengthy shift (the two injuries coming either side of half-time).
By the time Metcalf was taken away in an ambulance, a minute before the break, the Stiffs were already three goals down. A promising opening quarter, in which Stu Campbell (home on leave) and Mark Richardson had wrapped up the dangerous Darren Parker in midfield, gave way to a poor period in which Parker began to wield influence and Mark Smith was allowed to seemingly create – and score – chances at will.
The challenge that saw Metcalf carried off resulted in a free-kick from which the aforementioned Campbell got Easington back in the game. Not for long, though, and by the end of a desperately disappointing second period, Scully had cruised to the victory that ensured they would remain ahead of Reckitts at the wrong end of the table.
Afterwards, manager Mack praised the lively ‘Bezza’ for his unstinting enthusiasm and endeavour displayed throughout the game. As for the rest, to say their performance carried more than an “end of season” air about it would be about the kindest comment!
Still, overall, the Reserve team squad can be proud of their achievements in their first season at this level. Given the youthful nature of the squad and the fact that two or three of this year’s Casuals nucleus look set to progress upwards ahead of next season, manager Clarke can approach 2007/08 in positive mood.
Reserves: C Rawlings, C Senior, M Hooley, M Richardson, A McNaught (D Mackay-Dundas), D Campbell, A Metcalf (O Musgrove), T McLaughlin, A Barnett, J Cousins
