Stiffs left seeking home comfort
Old George (AFC Charter) 4 – 0 Easington United Reserves
EASINGTON United Reserves face a nervous run-in following defeat at champions-elect Old George in Goole.
With just four games to play, three of which are at home, manager John Clarke knows his side still require points to ensure top-flight County League football next term.
Given FC Ridings’ likely confirmation in bottom place, the locals remain one of several sides who may yet fill the other likely relegation space. With both Reckitts and Sculcoates Reserves having games in hand, they have some work to do before this is avoided.
Despite a comprehensive defeat at Western Road, however, manager Clarke was not overly critical of his young team’s performance. Deprived of Foster and Senior, the boss gave a start to young Matty Purse up front with the inclusion of Paul Morrow on the bench meaning he had even more reliance on youth against a side noted for their “robust” approach to the game – still, he compensated by bringing in Glenn Ratcliffe via the bench!
It was young Purse who actually had a great chance to give Easington a shock lead but his right foot shot was easily dealt with by the keeper. And having escaped this time, the Goolesters soon established dominance to take a three-goal interval lead.
After what had gone on at the Farm, there was pleasingly little to report in the way of unsavoury incidents although a head-to-head on the back of Jamie Cousins at a throw-in warranted more than the yellow card it produced.
Even the presence of title rivals Howden Amateurs on the Eastenders’ touchline couldn’t inspire a revival but there were glimpses of quality football on show to give Clarke encouragement.
Switching to a back four at the break brought with it a highly encouraging display from Paul Morrow, while the boss was also keen to highlight the hard work put in by his team right across the park.
Sadly, there were again careless mistakes that contributed to the final scoreline – mistakes that need to be erased when the aforementioned Howden, Boothferry and Poachers visit in the next few weeks.
Reserves: Rawlings, Fisk, D Campbell, A McNaught, Metcalf (Morrow), McLaughlin, J Cousins, Richardson, Smith, Purse (Ratcliffe), Barnett
