Holderness Advertiser 16th May
EASINGTON United and Withernsea meet at Low Farm tonight to determine who will meet Hedon Rangers in this year’s South Holderness Cup Final (6.30pm).
Having won their respective Preliminary Round ties a fortnight ago, both teams progressed to the semi-finals with further victories against lower league opposition. However, while holders Easington were far from convincing in their win over County League Division 4 side Patrington Stanley Utd Reserves, Withernsea swept past Division 3 outfit Hedon Rangers Reserves with some ease.
It took a Mike Nicholson hat-trick to see the Eastenders through courtesy of a 3-0 win at Low Farm. Having been frustrated for almost all the first half, Nicholson struck in the 44th, 50th and 63rd minutes to eventually break the visitors’ stubborn resistance.
No such worries for Withernsea at Hull Road. A James Gell hat-trick, two apiece for Chris Hardcastle and Chris Frost and further goals from Simon Wilson and Neil Stephenson completed a 9-0 rout for The Seasiders.
Hedon Rangers followed up their preliminary round victory at Patrington with wins over AFC Preston and Roos to book their place in the final. Adrian Cooper scored twice in the 3-0 win over Preston with Adrian Parkinson adding the other and Parkinson was again on target in the 6-0 semi-final win over Roos; the other goals coming from Mark Sansam, Peter Birney, Mike Dowd, Derek Peat and an ‘own goal’.
For Roos it was a case of “back down to earth with a bump” following their surprise first round success at Easington United Reserves, ex-East Ender Joni Purse having marked his return to Low Farm with the game’s only goal five minutes into the second half.
The final, which is being kindly sponsored by CFS Fuel Supplies, takes place at the Destiny Fitness Ground on Wednesday, 30 May (6.45pm). All proceeds from the competition go to the Neurosurgical Unit at Hull Royal Infirmary.
