Graham's late goal nicks it for Easington
Humber Premier League
Easington United 2 - 1 North Ferriby United Reserves
IF the sign of a good team is grinding out results when not playing well then Easington United supporters could yet be in for a fruitful campaign. For despite a second successive home win, the locals were awful for much of this game.
Poor decision making, an inability to keep the ball, weak tackling and at times a seemingly complete lack of understanding of the tasks required allowed a depleted but useful looking Ferriby side to dominate matters throughout. How the visitors went home empty-handed remains a mystery.
In mitigation this was the Eastenders’ first action for five weeks, they were asked to try out a new system that required several players to move out of their “comfort zones” and their preparations had been hit by the late loss of skipper Neil Rutter following a freak injury suffered at training.
But this Easington side does at least have spirit. For despite being under the cosh for almost the whole ninety minutes, it was they who returned to the warmth of the changing room as winners.
On a typical damp, dark and cold November afternoon, Ferriby set the tone early by immediately forcing their hosts on to the back foot and the opening quarter of an hour was played almost exclusively in the Easington half.
United’s 3-5-2 system soon became 5-3-2 with Jeffery and Frost forced onto the back foot, while the midfield trio of Lenham, Medforth and Havercroft found the early stages passing them by.
Errors were appearing all over the park and one on 15mins allowed Armstrong in on the left to pick out Davison who should really have done better from 12 yards out. A minute later Aaron Wade seized on some weak defending to break clear but Appleyard did well to save.
Having survived two such scares, the Eastenders went up the other end and scored with virtually their first real attack. Havercroft was brought down on the left side of the area and up stepped Medforth to drill his penalty low into the corner past a motionless Rob Moy.
The goal did little to alter the pattern of play although it was the home side who produced the next real chance. After Frost had outstripped a defender and unleashed a stinging shot that Moy failed to hold, the keeper then did brilliantly to deny both Thurkettle and Medforth as they attempted to convert the follow-up.
This moment seemed to inspire Easington to their best passage of play and in the period up to half-time they finally gained some ascendancy. Two minutes before the break Lenham’s quick thinking almost doubled the lead but his clever attempt from thirty yards was narrowly off-target.
However, despite this and Mack’s wise words at the break, it was Ferriby who again started the second half on top. And this time their dominance was rewarded; on the hour mark a free kick delivered into the home box saw the ball bounce off Campbell and Wade picked his spot low inside the near post.
As Mack made changes (including the introduction of Mark Hutchinson for his HPL debut) the visitors continued to threaten and on 74mins they went desperately close when Aldous’s stunning strike thumped against the bar.
Mee’s introduction behind the front two helped galvanise Easington to some extent and on 75mins Farndale brought a good save out of Moy.
But still the visitors looked the likely winners until, with just five minutes left, the Eastenders scored again. Campbell – making his 250th appearance – whipped in a superb free-kick that picked out the late arriving Andy Graham who drilled the ball low past Moy.
After a slightly anxious last few minutes referee Porter blew his full-time whistle and the hardy “Farm Faithful” could heave a huge sigh of relief.
