Maccer unhappy as Casuals leave it late
ER County League Division 4
Easington Utd Casuals 2 - 2 Eastrington Village
DAVE Clubley’s second half equaliser may well have rescued a point for the Casuals but manager Iain McNaught was far from pleased with this latest performance.
He said, “I was very disappointed. Indiscipline in the ranks, along with carrying too many individuals, cost us a valuable three points. Giving away daft free-kick after daft free-kick is just not good enough – I expect more from my players (especially from the seasoned campaigners).”
The boss reserved praise for just a few of his squad (“Steve Eldon, Biff, and Trev from those who started, Waddy and Dave Turley off the bench”) and added, “Whilst we have only lost once in the last four games, we need to demonstrate consistency and more application if we are to maintain our Division 4 status this season. I had a chat with the team and certain individuals after the game so they know what is expected of them. This level of performance is not acceptable.”
Ironically the locals had started brightly and for 20 minutes were seemingly coasting, thanks to ‘Biff’ McNaught’s scrambled goal at a corner. Having seen two or three attempts cleared off the line, the Club’s latest “600 Club” member bravely piled in and tucked the ball home.
Unfortunately, as so often happens, the Casuals seemed to take their foot off the pedal after scoring and they were punished when Eastrington netted a “soft” equaliser; one of the “daft” free-kicks highlighted by Maccer being struck direct, Eldon failing to hold the shot and the follow up being tucked away.
By their own admission Easington “never really got going” in the second half. They battled hard but never created much and seemed to tire on the heavy surface. Thus it was no surprise when the visitors took what appeared to be a match-winning lead.
Thankfully, the locals managed to rouse themselves and the decision to push Campbell “up top” proved productive when he rose to meet Turley’s free kick and knock the ball down for Clubley to fire home from an acute angle.
Easington then defended stoutly, finishing the game under intense pressure in which they had to see off a succession of corners. But, following his earlier lapse, Eldon showed excellent hands to preserve parity.
Casuals: Eldon, D Rutter, T Biglin, A McNaught, I McNaught, D Campbell, Ward (Findley, 77), Feeney (Newsam) (Turley), R Clubley (Waddingham), D Clubley, Brown
