Hat-trick for 'The Hutch' as Riston hit for six!
ERCFA Senior Country Cup Round 2
Easington Utd Reserves 6 - 0 Long Riston
Youngster Mark Hutchinson further enhanced his growing reputation with a fine hat-trick as the Eastenders Reserves gained their first win of the campaign in emphatic style.
Humber Premier League Division 1 side Long Riston were simply blown away at Low Farm as Easington progressed to the quarter finals of the Senior Country Cup.
Coming into the tie with no wins in five previous games this season, the Stiffs were bolstered by the simple fact of having fourteen players available for selection! Among these were Pete Waddingham and Steve Tennyson, drafted in following injury to goalkeeper Callum McLeod and the departure of Darren Thompson. In addition Anthony Barnett was handed a start after a couple of weeks on the first team bench, while Adam Metcalf and James Mee gained returns via the bench. Meanwhile the game provided home spectators with the first chance to see previous week’s debutants Jamie Hollingsworth and Phil Page.
Easington started strongly with their first attack yielding a corner from which Riston keeper Jamie Hatfield saved from Barnett.
At the other end, a rare lapse from the usually reliable Foster allowed Edeson through on goal but Waddingham got just enough on the shot to divert it onto the post.
Capitalising on this let-off, the Stiffs went up field to score. Good work from Barnett, popping up on the right side of the box, created the opening for Hutchinson who steered the ball inside the far post.
Three minutes later Waddingham palmed over Jordan Crooks’ well-struck free-kick in what proved to be the visitors’ last real goal threat of any note.
After Steve Tennyson and Barnett had both seen shots saved well by Hatfield, Easington struck again on 24mins; Tennyson again being denied but a Riston defender inadvertently getting the decisive touch to the rebound.
Hatfield’s fine save kept out James Rice’s 42nd minute shot, following good set-up play by Page, but Easington weren’t to be denied for long – Barnett’s cross picking out Rice whose lay-off was met perfectly by Hutchinson on the volley from just inside the box, the ball nestling neatly in the bottom corner.
After the break the Stiffs continued from where they’d left off and what was really pleasing was the quality of football on show; short, simple passing with good movement off the ball.
Further chances came and went, with Barnett being thwarted by keeper on a couple of occasions when put clean through. But eventually the goals came.
Hutchinson completed his hat trick around the hour mark, following neat build-up play down the right, the ball being squared to ‘The Hutch’ on the edge of box and the youngster simply cut inside his man before finding the bottom corner.
Central midfield partner Tom McLaughlin was next to get in on the act. After a rare Riston sortie had again been broken up, a quick break out saw the ball clipped over from the right to the unmarked McLaughlin, who took a touch before lifting it over the keeper from the edge of the box.
Substitute Dave Clubley then announced himself into proceedings by finishing off the scoring. Again the goal followed neat build up play down the right with ‘Clubbo’ on hand to drill the ball home from eighteen yards; “arguably the goal of the game” according to his manager.
Stand-in keeper Waddy's biggest problem second half was staying warm as the team as a whole worked hard to restrict chances to a couple of whipped balls across the face of goal.
Understandably, Smalley was left enthusing about his team’s display and must now hope his players can build on this in the league, beginning at Howden Amateurs on Saturday.
Easington: P Waddingham, M Findley, J Hollingsworth, M Hutchinson, C Foster, B Fisk, J Rice, T McLaughlin, S Tennyson (D Clubley), P Page (A Metcalf), A Barnett (Not used: J Mee)
