Relief all round as Easington end barren run
Humber Premier League
Easington United 2 – 0 Cleethorpes Town
EASINGTON United arrested their recent winless run thanks to two goals inside four second half minutes against Cleethorpes Town.
Anthony Barnett came off the bench to give the locals the lead with only his second touch on 70mins before Paul Farndale’s emphatic finish confirmed the points.
In the second successive HPL home game dominated by strong winds, Easington worked tremendously hard to just about deserve the points. And given the current squad shortages, it was huge morale-booster for Manager Mack and his players.
The latest batch of changes saw the eyebrow-raising inclusion of Pete Waddingham in goal, over eight years since his last such appearance! In addition, after a good session with massage therapist Carol and an intensive pre-match warm-up, there was a surprise stint on the bench for Steve Tennyson, back from three weeks’ out with a knee problem.
Elsewhere Mack welcomed Stuart Campbell back as part of a more regular looking back four line-up in which the only switch came for Matty Hart, moved inside to partner Andy Graham in the absence of skipper Rutter. Danny Medforth replaced the absent Walmlsey in midfield with Chris Frost coming in for Holtby on the right flank.
The strong south-westerly wind offered neither side much favour but Easington probably had what little advantage there was in the first half.
However, it was Town who threatened first, Craig Lenham reacting sharply to clear Tommy Watson’s 4th minute shot off the line after the visitors had worked a quickly taken corner.
A minute later Lenham fired narrowly wide at the other end before Frost just failed to get up high enough to connect with Thurkettle’s well-struck corner.
Cleethorpes – who’d arrived at the Farm with many of the same problems currently affecting their hosts – were constantly probing down the channels and before the break they created two great openings for striker Matty Tofton. Thankfully for the home crowd, neither was taken with Tofton’s aim being awry on the first and Waddingham getting down smartly to save the second.
At the other end, a strong penalty shout for a foul on Thurkettle was followed by two great openings for United in the run-up to half-time. Both came from long balls over the top, the first finding Craig Havercroft in the clear but unable to keep his shot down, the second releasing Thurkettle but keeper Graves did well to stick out an arm and save.
Into the second half and both teams searched for the decisive first goal but without creating a real clear-cut chance. Town always looked dangerous at set-pieces while Campbell’s fine delivery from left back kept the visitors’ rearguard on their toes.
A rash challenge on Havercroft forced him off on 68mins and two minutes later his replacement broke the deadlock, Barnett profiting after fullback Simmons’ back-pass had left Graves stranded.
On 73mins the game was won, Graham’s strong defensive header being helped on by Thurkettle to Farndale who took a touch before volleying powerfully over Graves from eighteen yards.
The aforementioned Tennyson made his HPL debut ten minutes from time and passed up two great chances to claim a first goal, while Frost failed to connect cleanly with another good opening as Easington stretched their hosts. At the other end United survived two loud penalty appeals in quick succession for fouls on striker Murray Sangster but otherwise held on confidently to record their fifth win of the campaign.
