No “Very Important” points for Reserves
ER County League Premier Division
Easington Utd Reserves 1 – 2 VIP Communications
Despite a third straight home league defeat, Stiffs boss Craig Smalley was slightly happier than of late. He described his team’s performance as being “better” while also bemoaning the Reserves’ luck: “Apart from an offside goal and a half-chance which went in they didn't really cause us any problems in front of goal”.
Unfortunately, a failure to take what was on offer at the other end cost Easington. Darren Thompson passed up a couple of presentable first half opportunities while the Stiffs also looked reasonably dangerous at corners. Unfortunately, VIP shaded possession and managed to make the most of two of their few goal-scoring chances, the first despite the forward looking yards offside.
Thankfully, goalkeeper Callum McLeod looked far more confident than in the previous week’s debut and ensured Easington were still in the game at half time thanks to a stunning penalty save. In addition to another couple of fine stops, when he was beaten, Dave Clubley was on hand to head off the line.
The Casuals reply again came from promising youngster Mark Hutchinson, courtesy of a fine run and emphatic finish from just inside the penalty area.
Smalley’s half time message was to use the penalty save as the turning point but despite a better performance and an increase in effort levels, Easington just couldn't manage to get the equaliser they deserved.
Chances came to sub Andy Milbank, who blazed over from an acute angle, and Dave Clubley who just failed to connect when sliding in at the far post after fine work and a great cross from Jonny Hairsine.
Smalley summed things up by saying: “Much better effort levels from the players this week, let’s continue to improve next weekend at Reckitts.
Easington: C McLeod, P Brown, A Metcalf, M Hutchinson, C Foster, B Fisk, D Clubley, M Findley, D Thompson, J Hairsine, D Collier (A Milbank, 60)
