Ferry pushes on leaving Casuals behind
ER County League Division 4
Wawne Ferry Reserves 3 – 1 Easington Utd Casuals
Although a physical Wawne Ferry Reserves side were matched stride for stride by the Casuals, with both the opposition and their large, vocal home support knowing they had been in a game, unfortunately lack of creativity at the other end ensured that it was always going to be hard for an over-pressed Casuals defence to prevent another “clean sweep” of East End defeats..
Early exchanges were fairly even until a long ball over the top of the back four was latched onto by the Wawne forward who rounded Eldon to break the deadlock. In truth it was the latest of several half-chances created by the hosts and was perhaps due reward for their extra potency going forward.
It looked like this was going to be the half time scoreline until an opportunity for the manager himself arose from a free-kick just inside the opposition half, just two minutes before the interval. The resulting kick was not dealt with by the home keeper, under pressure from Campbell and Waddingham, resulting in ‘Maccer’ claiming a very valuable equaliser.
Unfortunately teams are often at their most vulnerable immediately after scoring and so it proved with Wawne going straight upfield to net a second with virtually the last kick of the half; a shot through a crowd of players on the edge of the box into Eldon’s bottom left hand corner of the net.
The second half saw a similar pattern of play although the Casuals did manage to create several half chances. The excellent front pairing of Nibs Carrick and Waddingham ran their socks off with “Waddy” in particular covering some yardage to earn a richly deserved “MoM” award.
However, as has happened previously, the locals’ pushing-on to try and get something out of the game saw the hosts sneak another goal late on to clinch what McNaught felt was a “somewhat flattering” 3-1 victory.
The manager has again urged his players to remain positive. He said, “Yes the results are going against us but the effort and team spirit is there”, before adding how pleasing it was to see the return of “Nibsy, Biff and Ricey who all played well”.
Casuals: Eldon, D Rutter, T Biglin, A McNaught, I McNaught, D Campbell, Ward (Turley), Waddingham, Carrick, Newsam
