Harrod’s double helps Easington bounce back
South Holderness Cup Round 2
Withernsea 1 – 3 Easington United
TWO goals from Steve Harrod helped Easington United come from behind to beat Withernsea at Hull Road and progress to the semi-finals of the South Holderness Cup.
Mark Thompson gave the Seasiders a 22nd minute lead, which they held until ten minutes before the break when Harrod netted the first of his brace. His second, on 58mins, gave the Eastenders a lead they rarely looked like relinquishing and Dan Potts’ goal in the final minute – his first for the senior squad – confirmed the victory.
The Easington squad showed just the one addition to that which had beaten Malet Lambert, with Kevin Milner taking up the vacant subs’ spot.
Withernsea came into the game also buoyed by a win over Malet a week earlier. Playing in a change black and white strip they enjoyed the first clear sight of goal when Mark Wilson scuffed a shot straight at Kevin Appleyard.
Clear cut chances were few and far between in the opening quarter. On 20mins Chris Frost showed great industry down the right before finding James Mee on the edge of the box but the youngster’s shot was struck straight at Pete Sugden.
Two minutes later the hosts were ahead. Phil Wicks’ slightly mishit volley got caught under Neil Rutter’s feet and fell invitingly to the lively young Thompson who drilled it under Appleyard.
Within two minutes Thompson should have doubled the lead. Again finding space inside the area his first shot was parried by Appleyard straight back to him but he smashed the follow-up over the bar.
Both sides then exchanged shots from distance – Harrod’s return of Sugden’s poor clearance from a back-pass and Wicks’ speculative volley both sending the ball not too far over the top.
On 35mins the Eastenders saw strong handball claims go unanswered following a Paul Morrow corner but a minute later they were level. Rutter started the move, retrieving the ball on halfway before finding Potts on the right of the area and from his cross Harrod beat the advancing Sugden to volley home from close range.
Five minutes before half-time United almost took the lead; from Morrow’s corner, Rutter got up above the home defence to power a header just over the top.
Having dominated the latter stages of the first half, Easington almost saw their opponents regain the initiative at the start of the second half when Chris Hardcastle’s fine pass played Owen Mountain in down the left but the youngster blazed over when he should really have found the target.
This turned out to be Withernsea’s last real sight of goal and on 58mins it was Easington who scored the decisive second.
Anthony Barnett fed Mee thirty yards out; the young striker in turn threaded a pass through to where Harrod seized on a mix-up between Westoby and Sugden to score.
From this point forward Easington always looked the more likely winners but without getting that decisive third goal. Twice the lively Frost – revelling in matters against his former team-mates – broke clear down the right, first flashing a shot wide of the far post then seeing Sugden palm another effort wide.
At the other end the hosts felt they should have had a penalty but Graham got just enough of the ball to convince Mr. McNaughton otherwise. And with just a minute left the Eastenders sealed matters. Withernsea failed to deal with a corner and when Adam Metcalf’s superb volley from the edge of the box came down off the bar, Potts was on hand to head home from six yards and confirm passage to the last four.
Easington: K Appleyard, D Medforth, P Morrow (A Metcalf, 80), D Potts, N Rutter, A Graham, C Frost, J Cousins, J Mee (D Thompson, 75), S Harrod, A Barnett (K Milner, 75)
Referee: Mr. R. McNaughton (Hull)
