Holderness Advertiser 2nd April
AMID the disruption caused by the Easter cold snap, fifteen intrepid cyclists from Easington United completed a testing sixty-mile long run down the Yorkshire coast on Bank Holiday Monday, raising money for two worthy causes.
Despite road conditions hampering the trip up to the snowy Scarborough start point, the group set off at 8.45am and arrived in Easington some five hours and fifteen minutes later, having made about an hour’s worth of stops.
Along the way the “Hugging The Coast” bike riders took in football grounds at Bridlington, Hornsea, Roos, Aldbrough and Withernsea before reaching their destination at Easington's Low Farm home.
Afterwards, event organiser Craig Foster estimated that over £3,000 has so far been raised with donations still being pledged. The money is to be split between the Club and the purchase of a Legendair machine that should enable Duchenne’s disease sufferer Jon-Paul Walker to leave his Withernsea home and achieve his lifelong ambition of visiting the London Eye.
Foster and his fellow riders – Kevin Appleyard, Jamie & Stewart Cousins, Danny & Stuart Campbell, John Clarke, Darren Dawson, Andy Graham, Tony Hunt, Tom McLaughlin, Jimmy Neilson, Chris Rawlings, Neil Rutter and Darren Thompson – would like to thank all those who supported the event, particularly those involved in helping out on the day.
FOLLOWING a second successive postponement due to a waterlogged pitch last weekend, Easington United will hope to resume action this Saturday when they travel to Humberston to play LSS Lucarlys.
Having struggled with numerous absentees in recent weeks, Eastenders manager Dave Mackay-Dundas could have selection problems of a different kind ahead of the trip. Kevin Appleyard, Luke Jeffery, Jimmy Neilson, Dan Potts, Craig Smalley and new signing Craig Lenham could all be challenging for places.
Appleyard is back after suspension, Jeffery and Potts have returned from holiday, while Neilson and Smalley are both expected to have recovered from recent injuries. As for Lenham, he has joined the Club from Hull SFL Division 1 side St Peters FC and offers another option in either defence or midfield.
LSS inflicted upon the Eastenders their first home defeat of the season back in November and recently completed a 1-0 win at leaders Smith & Nephew. They will therefore provide another stiff barrier to the Eastenders’ hopes of ending their recent four-match winless run.
Elsewhere the Reserves went down 2-5 at title hopefuls AFC Charter in the ER County League Premier Division on Saturday. Darren Thompson and Stuart Campbell were on target for Easington. On Tuesday they were hoping to make progress in the County League’s H.E. Dean Cup when they made the short trip to meet Withernsea Reserves in round one.
Finally, invitations have gone out for the annual South Holderness Cup competition, in which Easington are seeking a third successive win and their ninth in the last eleven attempts since lifting the trophy for the first time in 1997.

CLUB NOTES
The Eastenders head to Humberston to face LSS Lucarlys in the HPL Premier Division on Saturday. Having struggled to assemble a full-strength squad in recent weeks, Manager Mack could have an abundance of riches from which to choose this weekend, with up to eight extra players in contention again after returning from holiday, injury or – as in the case of 21-year-old Craig Lenham – having joined the Club just before the 31 March registration deadline. However, at time of going to press, two of the aforementioned eight were already slight doubts; goalkeeper Kevin Appleyard (virus) and defender Luke Jeffery (injury) having both been ruled out of the Reserves’ HE Dean Cup tie on Tuesday night.
Dates have been rearranged for most of the recently postponed games in both the Humber Premier League and County League. At HPL level, the game at Westella & Willerby has been rescheduled for 3 May. Meanwhile, the Reserves’ County League Premier Division home game against Bridlington Lion has been rescheduled for 19 April (although this is subject to change as Low Farm hosts a HPL fixture that day) and the Casuals’ trip to Withernsea 3rds in Division 4 has been fixed for this Saturday (5 April). Just the home HPL match against Beverley Town still awaits a new date.
Depending on the outcome of Tuesday’s first round fixture at Withernsea, the Eastenders Reserves may return to action on Tuesday (8 April) in the second round of the County League’s HE Dean Cup. The winners of the tie at Hull Road were set to entertain either Skirlaugh or Wawne Ferry.
The Junior Football Academy continues on Saturday (10-11.30am). In case of adverse weather / pitch conditions, please check with Daniel on 07703 517525 beforehand.
