Holderness Advertiser 26th March
THE weather ensured that none of Easington United’s three teams played last Saturday, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing given their current squad shortages.
Things are looking better ahead of this week’s home game against Beverley Town. Ollie Musgrove and Danny Medforth are both back off holiday and Craig Smalley is in line for a surprising return to action, after five weeks out with injury. Also looking to figure is Jimmy Neilson, sidelined last week with a knee problem, while youngsters Luke Smith and Brett Fisk, both called up last Saturday, may well retain their places.
With goalkeeper Kevin Appleyard serving a one-week suspension, Medforth is set to repeat the role he performed to such good effect against Hutton Cranswick last month.
Still missing from the Easington line-up are injured duo John Batch and Mike Nicholson, while Luke Jeffery is on holiday.
The Eastenders are hoping to end a four-match run without a win in the Humber Premier League and will be gunning for revenge against Beverley, having seen their East Riding Senior Cup hopes ended by the same opponents last month.
Off the field the Club Committee were due to meet last night to discuss the proposal passed at the recent Special General Meeting to make a formal application for membership of the Central Midlands League for season 2008/09.
This follows provisional acceptance of the Club after a ground visit by members of the CML Committee. If followed through, Easington could be one of three HPL clubs moving into the new set-up, the others being Westella & Willerby and Hutton Cranswick United.

Easington looking to move on up
FOR once the action on the field is not the most important thing occupying the attention of Easington United supporters, following the Special General Meeting (SGM) held at The Neptune Inn last week.
In a proposal that was set to be ratified at a meeting of the club’s Management Committee on Tuesday, members voted to make a formal application to join the Central Midlands League (CML) for season 2008/09, subject to FA approval of that competition’s proposed reorganisation.
The proposed move comes after a visit by members of the CML Ground Grading Committee to Low Farm, at which only minor upgrades to the existing facilities were recommended. Should these be well on the way to completion by the time of the next visit in June, it would appear that the Eastenders will be joining Westella & Willerby and Hutton Cranswick in a new competition.
The Central Midlands League is set to operate North and South regional divisions following other changes to the “Football Pyramid” in the area. Should membership be confirmed, instead of regular games in and around Hull next season, the Eastenders will face numerous trips down the M18 as well as across the River Humber to Louth and Appleby Frodingham.
While such a move maintains the Club’s aim to provide as high a standard of football as possible for the people of Holderness, of more immediate concern to First Team boss Dave Mackay-Dundas will be the make-up of the squad available to him ahead of this weekend’s home game against Beverley Town in the Humber Premier League.
Current absentees include Steve Harrod, departed for pastures new, and both John Batch and Mike Nicholson who now look unlikely to figure again this season. Meanwhile Luke Jeffery and Dan Potts are away on holiday.
On the plus side, Ollie Musgrove and Danny Medforth are back off holiday with the latter set to repeat the goal keeping role he performed to such good effect against Hutton Cranswick last month as Kevin Appleyard serves a one-match suspension.
Elsewhere Craig Smalley and Jimmy Neilson are hoping to figure again after injury. Smalley is in line for a surprising return after five weeks out with knee trouble, while Neilson was sidelined last weekend with a similar problem that had hampered him for much of the game against Hornsea a fortnight ago.
The Eastenders are looking to end a four-match run without a win in the Humber Premier League and will be gunning for revenge against Beverley, having seen their East Riding Senior Cup hopes ended by the Beavers at the same venue.
In the ER County League, the Reserves go to AFC Charter needing just one win from two games to consign Holme Rovers to bottom spot in the Premier Division. This follows the latter’s defeat at Beverley Town Reserves on Saturday.
Defending champions Charter now find themselves almost unexpectedly back in the title hunt following North Ferriby’s recent slip-ups. Therefore a difficult afternoon awaits manager Mike Wilson who should welcome Darren Thompson back to action following a couple of weeks’ absence.
On the down side, Darren Dawson is struggling with injury, while James Robinson and James Mee are on holiday – both should return in time for the HE Dean Cup first round tie at Withernsea Reserves next Tuesday (1 April, kick-off 6.15pm).
In Division 4 the Casuals have no game – they now await a new date for their scheduled trip to Withernsea Thirds which was postponed last Saturday.
The Junior Football Academy continues on Saturday (10-11.30am). In case of adverse weather / pitch conditions, please check with Daniel on 07703 517525 beforehand.

Pedal powered Eastenders hug the coast for warmth!
AMID the disruption caused to local amateur sport by the wintry blasts that hit the East Riding over the weekend, fifteen intrepid cyclists from Easington United completed a testing sixty-mile long run down the Yorkshire coast on Bank Holiday Monday, raising money for two worthy causes.
Led by “Wing Commander” Craig Foster, the party set off from a snowy Scarborough at 8.45am and arrived in Easington some five hours and fifteen minutes later. Along the way the two-wheeled party took in football grounds at Bridlington, Hornsea, Roos, Aldbrough and Withernsea en route to their Low Farm home.
Afterwards, a tired but relieved “Wingco” estimated that over £3,000 had been raised in the process. The money is to be split between the Club and the purchase of a machine which will enable Withernsea man Jon-Paul Walker, who suffers from Duchenne’s disease, to achieve his lifelong ambition of visiting the London Eye.
On behalf of Foster and the other riders – Kevin Appleyard, Jamie & ‘Dooley’ Cousins, Danny & Stuart Campbell, John Clarke, Darren Dawson, Andy Graham, Tony Hunt, Tom McLaughlin, Jimmy Neilson, Chris Rawlings, Neil Rutter and Darren Thompson – the Club would like to thank the following for their support of the event: Paul Thompson & GRD Engineering (invaluable), Discount Bikes (based in Hollym), the staff & The Spread Eagle in Withernsea, Paul & Christine at The Neptune Inn in Easington and especially Sean McLaughlin & the various lasses (Nicky, Laura, Steph, Angie & Carron) who braved treacherous driving conditions on the way up and provided moral support on the way back down. In addition of course, thanks go to everybody else who supported and/or sponsored the event.
Meanwhile, rumours that skipper “Nige” Rutter’s self-designed “Two-Sponge Pant Support”, which he employed to good effect on the ride, is to be submitted ahead of the next series of Dragon’s Den are some way off the mark!
