Holderness Advertiser 30th January
Mike Nicholson's 85th minute goal proved enough to settle a hard-fought Holderness Derby at the Destiny Fitness Ground and complete a league double for Easington United over Hedon Rangers.
Unlike the two teams’ first meeting back in August, however, this was anything but a comfortable win for the Eastenders.
Rangers responded well to John-Paul Johnson's 2nd minute opener and deservedly levelled through Glen Adams before the break. But Easington created the better opportunities after the break and Nicholson broke clear to beat goalkeeper Martin for the decisive second.
The win was a real tonic for manager Dave Mackay-Dundas who went into the game without five first team regulars. The boss had to name himself among the substitutes along with Dan Potts, who had only received the all-clear following a recent knee operation some two days beforehand, and new signing Paul Wilson, who provided a welcome left-sided option in the absence of Kevin Milner and Ollie Musgrove.
Without a game this weekend, Mackay-Dundas is hopeful of arranging a “get-together” ahead of the following week’s ER Senior Cup quarter final against Beverley Town. Four of Saturday’s absentees – skipper Neil Rutter, Ollie Musgrove, Kevin Milner and Craig Smalley – could be available for that game with only John Batch looking a long-term injury worry.
In the only game involving Easington teams this Saturday, the Reserves entertain York League side Malton & Norton in the ER Senior Country Cup quarter-finals. The locals will be full of confidence following Saturday’s stunning 3-1 league win at Premier Division leaders North Ferriby Athletic. Darren Thompson (2) and Stuart Campbell were the scorers.

CLUB NOTES
There is only one game in store for the Club this weekend – but it’s a big one! At Low Farm the Eastenders Reserves entertain York League side Malton & Norton in the quarter-finals of the ERCFA Senior Country Cup. Manager Mike Wilson has no injuries to report following last week’s impressive league win and could also have both Craig Foster and John Clarke available for selection. A big crowd to support the lads would be appreciated.
Neither the First team nor the Casuals have scheduled fixtures this Saturday. However, members of the senior squad are reminded that Ennerdale has been booked for 10am on Sunday to allow preparation for next week’s ERCFA Senior Cup quarter-final. Please make every effort to attend.
The improving weather conditions should allow the Junior Football Academy to resume this Saturday (10-11.30am). Please check with Daniel on 07703 517525 beforehand.
The Coffee Morning held in aid of the Easington Recreation & sports Association last Saturday raised £70.00. Thanks to all who attended and/or supported in any way.
Finally, Club members were saddened to learn of the death of Roy Eldon last week. In addition to his family members present within our squad, we also have a sizeable contingent of former Eldons FC players within the ranks. Our thoughts go out to Roy’s family at this time.
