2007 South Holderness Cup

HEDON RANGERS are the first team through to this season’s South Holderness Cup Final, following recent wins over AFC PRESTON and ROOS.
In what Club secretary Dave Thompson described as “bit of a scrappy game” against Preston in the first round, Adrian Cooper set Rangers on their way with a first half penalty before bagging his and his side’s second before the break.
Adrian Parkinson added a third in the second half as further chances came and went. Mike Dowd hit the bar and the Preston goalkeeper pulled off a couple of good saves. At the other end, although rarely tested, Rangers keeper Derek Peak was called upon to produce one tremendous stop late on to maintain his team’s clean sheet.
As you will have seen in last week’s Gazette Sport, County League Division 3 side Roos provided Hedon with unlikely looking semi-final opponents. Joni Purse’s goal five minutes into the second half took them through at the expense of Premier Division hosts EASINGTON UNITED RESERVES.
Unfortunately for Les Sennett’s side, they couldn’t repeat their heroics last Wednesday at the Destiny Fitness Ground. After a spirited start by the visitors, Mark Sansam eventually broke the deadlock for Hedon who never looked back.
Further goals followed before the break from Adrian Parkinson and Pete Birney, the latter being “the goal of the game – a real belter” according to Dave Thompson. In the second half, Roos continued to battle hard but Mike Dowd, an ‘own goal’ and a penalty converted by goalkeeper Derek Peat took Kenny Harrison’s side through to their first South Holderness Cup Final since 2001.
Therein they will meet either EASINGTON UNITED or WITHERNSEA who were set to meet last night at Low Farm in the second semi-final.
Holders Easington made hard work of getting past County League Division 4 side PATRINGTON STANLEY UTD RESERVES in their first round tie; Mike Nicholson eventually grabbing a hat-trick in a 3-0 win.
Withernsea, meanwhile, had no such trouble against HEDON RANGERS RESERVES in last week’s tie at Hull Road. James Gell grabbed a hat-trick for the Seasiders, with Chris Frost and Chris Hardcastle both bagging a brace apiece. The other goals came courtesy of Simon Wilson and Neil Stephenson.
The final, which is being kindly sponsored by CFS Fuel Supplies, takes place at the Destiny Fitness Ground on Wednesday, 30 May (6.45pm). All proceeds from the competition go to the Neurosurgical Unit at Hull Royal Infirmary.
