Purse snatch shocks Stiffs
South Holderness Cup Round One
Easington United Res 0 – 1 Roos AFC
THE night before the senior squad’s toils, Joni Purse returned to Low Farm to dump the Reserves out of the competition in this season’s first real surprise result.
Appearing at ‘The Farm’ for the first time since joining his home club Roos at the turn of the year, the youngster scored the game’s only goal five minutes into the second half.
The Stiffs can have no real complaints. Despite dominating the game in terms of possession and territory, they hardly forced Roos keeper John Folkard into a save of any note.
Luke Smith, with a header, and Tom McLaughlin were both narrowly off-target first half, while Chris Senior passed up one of the better chances to break the deadlock early in the second period; volleying over when seemingly well-placed.
Moments later Purse seized on some uncertainty at the heart of the Easington defence and lobbed Rawlings from fifteen yards out.
That came on 50mins and three minutes later the scorer almost repeated the feat, this time his aim being a fraction too high. It was the visitors’ last real chance of the game.
But for their entire endeavour during the remaining half-hour, Easington rarely looked like forcing an equaliser. Even the introduction of an aerial threat in Craig Foster failed to yield any reward against a packed Roos rearguard.
Afterwards, a very disappointed Clarke refused to berate his players, reminding everybody that his side consisted of five lads under eighteen years old and several more not many years their senior. This game – as with the season just gone – has formed part of a big learning curve from which they will surely emerge stronger. Not that this makes Friday’s setback any easier to swallow.
Reserves: C Rawlings, B Fisk, M Hooley, C Senior, A McNaught, D Campbell (M Richardson), A Metcalf (D Dawson), T McLaughlin, L Smith (C Foster), A Barnett, J Cousins
Referee: Mr. D. Musgrove
