Hedon make it hard for holders
South Holderness Cup Preliminary Round
Easington United 2 – 1 Hedon United
HOLDERS Easington made hard work of overcoming Dave Gatti’s depleted but spirited Hedon side to reach the last eight of this season’s South Holderness Cup.
In the event it took a fine strike from Ian Barrow, just ten minutes from time, to earn the Eastenders a home tie against Patrington Stanley United Reserves.
With Steve Harrod working, manager Mack restored Danny Medforth to the attack. John Batch returned to the heart of the defence with youngster Paul Morrow included among the subs as reward for an encouraging start to life with the Eastenders.
The aforementioned Gatti – who’d been on the verge of conceding the game at lunchtime following a glut of withdrawals – included himself in the starting eleven and then saw his side take a shock lead.
After Barrow had headed a Craig Smalley cross against the post at one end and Sam Gatti had fired narrowly over at the other, Chris Young broke the deadlock when beating Appleyard with a looping header from 18 yards.
The Eastenders were visibly stung by the goal and struggled to find any rhythm as their opponents grew in confidence. Midway through the half, however, they levelled matters. Danny Medforth’s free kick found Andy Graham and when his header came back off the post, Darren Thompson reacted quickest to poke the ball home.
This was one of few moments of note in a flat first half performance, although Barrow came close to snatching the lead just before the break. Latching on to Appleyard’s long clearance, the winger managed to lob the ball over advancing goalkeeper Martin but was denied by a combination of post and defender.
Hedon deserve full credit for their first half display and they continued to battle into the second half, which rapidly became a procession of Easington attacks on the visitors’ goal.
The first two chances fell to Neil Rutter, one coming from a Medforth corner that almost surprised him following a deflection, his far post header flying high and wide. Moments later, following neat football down the right, the skipper found himself well placed but dragged his shot wide of the far post from 15 yards.
Thompson, whose pace caused Hedon all sorts of problems, repeated Rutter’s feat after Medforth had put him through before Nicholson lifted another effort over the bar from Luke Jeffery’s cross.
Jeffery was one of the night’s major pluses for manager Mack, the youngster showing considerable awareness and being the source of much of Easington’s attacking play down the right.
Fellow teenagers Musgrove and Morrow both entered the fray as the second half continued to be a succession of wasted chances. As the evening closed in and the lottery of penalties loomed large, Rutter fired high having made himself space and Potts volleyed just wide from a half-cleared free-kick before Barrow struck the decisive blow.
Having been pushed on following Medforth’s withdrawal, the lively ‘Bazza’ cut in from the right side of the box before drilling a sweet left foot shot low inside the near post.
The scorer made way for Dave Walmsley in the dying moments and there was still time for Musgrove to volley wide from 20 yards and Morrow to see his close-range effort well saved.
Easington: K Appleyard, L Jeffery, C Smalley, D Potts, J Batch, A Graham, I Barrow (D Walmsley, 86), M Nicholson, D Thompson (P Morrow, 78), D Medforth (O Musgrove, 71), N Rutter
