Pasha helps Casuals out of the Brown stuff!
Easington United Casuals 3 – 1 Brandesburton 3rds
THE Casuals’ win at Humbleton and Withernsea’s defeat by Long Riston means that barring any major reorganisation over the summer, Doug Clubley’s side will be playing Division 4 football next season.
Having allowed rivals Molescroft to get out of gaol in midweek, the locals knew they could afford no slip-ups against a Brandes’ side that had looked pretty useful in the two teams’ earlier meeting.
With cricket depriving him of Ratcliffe and Purse, in addition to an already stretched squad list, manager Clubley was forced into a drastic clarification of rules governing player eligibility before naming his team!
In the event, goalkeeper Kev Appleyard and Danny Medforth were included in a 12-man squad, ‘Meddy’ taking up the sole place on the bench.
Not surprisingly in view of what was at stake, a patchy and nervy performance ensued. This wasn’t helped by a rock-hard surface, which made control and passing difficult. However, the locals began really well and coasted in to a two goal lead.
First Mike Hooley and Darren Dawson linked well down the right before releasing Dave Clubley. His cross was touched back by Chris Smith to Rich Clubley who tucked it way for 1-0.
The second goal followed shortly after. This time a ball in from Luke Jeffery was held up well by Smith before he in turn released the other Clubley who ran on to beat the advancing keeper.
Brandesburton had offered little by way of reply up until this point but they were handed a way back when the Casuals failed to clear their lines from a corner and resulting free-kick. With Appleyard seemingly clattered by the striker and then sat on in the ensuing goal mouth scramble, the ball was eventually bundled home for 2-1.
In view of what had happened in Beverley, the Casuals needed a third goal and it duly came. Medforth, on for Smith for the last quarter, skipped past his man down the left and pulled the back for the arriving Pasha Brown to score from ten yards.
Decent performances were highlighted afterwards from Dawson in midfield and Trev Biglin at full back. The main positive of course was the result – something that now means that the remaining games against promotion-chasing Dads FC (1 May) and Skidby Millers Reserves (still tbc) can be approached in relaxed mood.
