Casuals dependent on Molescroft “six-pointer” Easington Utd Casuals 2 – 5 Howden Town
A second successive home defeat for Clubley’s Casuals against one of Division 4 frontrunners leaves them needing to win at Molescroft on Tuesday week to allay fears of an immediate return to Division 5. As with the previous week’s reverse against Skirlaugh, the result didn’t fully reflect the game’s full story. Similar to that Skirlaugh game the locals gave themselves a mountain to climb by conceding early goals. However, after a first that Steve Eldon – in for the gardening ‘Ebo’ – took responsibility for, manager Clubley felt both the second and third carried more than a hint of offside. A fourth goal early in the second half seemed to set the seal on things but the Casuals showed great character to come back. After seeing one effort strike the woodwork, Glenn Ratcliffe reduced arrears before putting Mike Hooley through to beat the keeper for 2-4. At this stage there was a real feeling that Easington could come back but despite plenty of effort, the Howden goal survived intact and the visitors rubbed salt in the wound with a breakaway fifth in the final minute.
