Mack happy with point
Barton Town OB Reserves 1 – 1 Easington United
DESPITE his side’s failure to return to winning ways, Eastenders boss Dave Mackay-Dundas was satisfied with their performance at Barton’s impressive new-look venue on Saturday.
Viewed as perhaps the best playing surface in the HPL, Marsh Lane encouraged an entertaining, open game of football between two evenly-matched teams.
Barton showed six personnel changes from the team brushed aside with some ease at Low Farm in November, while the Eastenders showed just two from that humbled at home by Hedon Rangers last time out; Darren Thompson coming in for injured striker Rob Kamis, while John Batch returned to partner Andy Graham at the back with Neil Rutter restored to midfield and Danny Medforth on the bench.
Easington had the best of the first half opportunities. Ian Barrow enjoyed the first, cutting in from the right and beating two defenders before opting to pass when a shot appeared favourite.
This was followed by two sweeping cross-field moves; the first releasing Kev Milner whose resulting cross from the left was just too far ahead of the arriving strikers, the second putting Craig Smalley in with a sight of goal from a tight angle, his shot being deflected for a corner.
On 20mins, Rutter was left unmarked at a corner but couldn’t keep his header down from a fine Steve Harrod delivery and the skipper had sight of Mike Burley’s goal again five minutes later but, having cut inside and shaken off a couple of defenders, he shot high and wide.
The goal the Eastenders’ efforts warranted came on 35mins. Darren Thompson latched onto a through ball and, held up on the left side of the penalty area, coolly back-heeled it to the arriving Mike Nicholson who swept home inside the far corner.
Having enjoyed the better of the opening ten minutes, the home side had offered little by way of threat during the first half. They came out in more determined mood after the break but again the Eastenders enjoyed the early opportunities, Nicholson being denied by a fine save from Burley.
Town then went close to an equaliser, a free kick rattling Appleyard’s bar before being cleared to safety.
Easington looked to have made it 2-0 when Barrow won a great header on half way to release Thompson whose shot seemed destined for the far top corner before Burley got up to brilliantly finger tip it away.
Barrow himself then went close but his header at full stretch from six yards out was too high. Medforth replaced Rutter on 63mins and Easington remained in the ascendancy. But another spate of pressure, which yielded three successive corners, prompted a goal for Barton on the counter two minutes later; a break down the left resulting in a cross and shot that deflected in off Potts at the near post.
Paul Wilkinson came on for the hard-working Thompson and the game entered an end-to-end phase to the close, which the Eastenders just about shaded without finding the decisive goal.
Burley again came to Barton’s rescue when palming away a Milner free-kick; Harrod fired just wide from 25 yards and Wilkinson went even closer from twenty after beating two defenders. The substitute striker then found the side-netting, following another sweeping move, having swivelled and shot when a lay-back to Nicholson was perhaps the better option.
When Wilks did then take the unselfish option, moments later, Milner put in a low cross-shot that Barrow just failed to convert at the far post.
The winger made way for Ollie Musgrove as Easington continued to chase the game but the final chance came Barton’s way in the dying minutes, only Kevin Appleyard preventing the hosts from snatching all three points when superbly turning away a top corner-bound effort.
