Casuals go close to upsetting Dads
Easington Utd Casuals 0 – 1 Dads Against Drugs FC
CASUALS boss Doug Clubley knows his side passed up a golden opportunity to reach the league cup semi-finals when they just failed to find the finish required to overcome Division 4 title favourites DADS at Humbleton.
In terms of territory and possession, the locals enjoyed dominance over a team destined for further honours following their Division 5 success of last year. But when Milner – in as late replacement for the injured Mike Hooley – fired narrowly wide from Dave Clubley’s injury time lay-off, their hopes of causing an upset went too.
Milner was one of several changes to the “Second Eleven” that had won the previous week’s derby. Darren Dawson returned to partner new boy Paul Morrow in the centre of midfield, while Matty Findley (back despite a troublesome hamstring) was joined on the bench by the returning Pasha Brown and Andy Graham, the latter answering the call following Adam Swaby’s late cry-off due to work.
With the wind behind them before the break, the Casuals put their opponents on the back foot. But despite forcing a series of corners – from which they looked increasingly dangerous – clear goal scoring opportunities remained hard to come by.
If both sides thought the wind had been a factor in the direction of the first half they were mistaken. Despite playing into it after the break, Clubley’s side continued to enjoy the better of things but, sadly, without being able to find the cutting edge.
The decisive moment arrived ten minutes from time when one of the Dads found room down the right and his cross was swept past the impressive ‘Ebo’ for the game’s only goal.
The goal was harsh on the Casuals’ keeper who, despite having little to do in terms of shot saving, showed excellent handling in the difficult conditions and commanded his area well.
Dawson and Morrow showed up well in the middle of the park and, overall, the Casuals can take a lot of heart from another encouraging display.
Casuals: I Thurkettle, S Cousins (P Brown), T Biglin, P Morrow, I McNaught, K Milner, D Clubley, D Dawson, R Clubley, C Smith (A Graham), M Purse (Sub: M Findley)
