Confident Casuals find safety…for now!
Withernsea 3rds 0 – 3 Easington Utd Casuals
THE Casuals completed back-to-back wins for the first time this season and moved out of the bottom two in Division 4 thanks to a convincing victory at Hull Road.
The result was never really in doubt from the moment Chris Smith broke the deadlock just past the half-hour mark. In the event only the excellence of young Withernsea keeper Healing ensured his side remained in the game for as long as they did.
Minus the injured Matty Findley (hamstring) and the absent Darren Dawson (wedding) from the previous week, manager Doug Clubley included teenage trio Barnett, Fisk and McLaughlin in his squad along with would-be teenager Danny Campbell.
Tom McLaughlin replaced Dawson in the centre of the park and alongside fellow youngster Jamie Cousins, proved at the hub of most things the Casuals created, providing excellent service to wide men Dave Clubley and the particularly lively Matty Purse. With excellent passing and movement throughout the team, the visitors gave their hosts a torrid time with the Seasiders’ response of long balls launched down the park being meat and drink to the Casuals “veteran” back four.
The breakthrough came courtesy of a break down the left by Purse, having been put through by Cousins junior. His cross was half-cleared to the edge of the box from where McLaughlin fired it back with Smith getting the decisive flick to divert it past the keeper.
Despite their dominance, however, Easington’s failure to find the ‘killer’ second goal meant that the hosts remained in with a shout – especially when Dave Clubley saw his second half penalty well saved by Healing, following handball at a corner.
However, with Casuals keeper ‘Ebo’ rarely troubled and showing excellent handling and distribution, his side always looked the more likely scorers.
And so it proved, on 65mins, when McNaught’s “measured chip” down the middle found substitute Barnett who capitalised on a flat-footed defence to beat the onrushing keeper for 2-0.
Ten minutes from time, Dave Clubley volleyed home a corner from close range to complete the scoring, seal a rare league double for his side and prompt elevation in the table over Molescroft and out of the “danger zone”. The aim now is to ensure it is permanent.
Casuals: I Thurkettle, S Cousins, T Biglin, T McLaughlin, I McNaught (D Campbell), M Hooley (B Fisk), D Clubley, J Cousins, R Clubley, C Smith (A Barnett), M Purse
