Timing proves right for two-goal Thommo!
Hedon Rangers 0 – 4 Easington United
EASINGTON United manager Dave Mackay-Dundas has maintained all season that he would ‘promote’ Darren Thompson when both he and Reserves boss John Clarke felt the player was ready. Having finally earned a call-up following twelve league goals for the Stiffs this term, the 22-year old striker celebrated by scoring with his first touch on coming on as sub against Hedon Rangers, before adding a second goal later as the Eastenders recorded a comfortable win.
On a day that saw all other HPL Premier Division games wiped out by wet pitches, Easington took advantage to join the top four, level on points with second-placed Hutton Cranswick and Westella.
Their performance on a pitch that was heavy but certainly playable left their manager happy overall although he expressed concern about lapses in concentration in both halves – factors that could prove costly in the remaining games.
On chances created, the result could have been even more emphatic although it was Hedon’s Brough who enjoyed the first sight of goal, a somewhat speculative shot from 30 yards that flew wide.
That came in the 5th minute but two minutes later Easington took the lead. Kevin Milner’s fine pass was inadvertently diverted by defender Franks into the path of Mike Nicholson who raced clear before squaring for Steve Harrod to apply the easiest of finishes.
A minute later it should have been two. Harrod this time turned provider to set Ian Barrow clear but he fired straight at goalkeeper Peat.
The Hedon defence was all over the place at this time and inside another minute Easington should have scored again, Danny Medforth this time the man to find himself clear but firing off target, following another quality pass from Milner.
To their credit, Rangers started to come more into things. On 13mins a slip by Graham allowed Adrian Parkinson sight of goal but the striker fired wide. The home side were enjoying the better possession but failed to really make anything of it, although Pete Smith wasted one good opening when latching onto namesake Dave’s pass on 25mins.
An equaliser at this point could have made things interesting but instead it was 2-0 five minutes later. The hosts failed to deal with Craig Smalley’s cross and in the ensuing scramble, Ollie Musgrove took advantage to beat Peat from close range at the second attempt.
Mark Sansam went close to an immediate reply when glancing over a Cooper free-kick, but twice more before half-time the Eastenders should have killed the game off.
Neil Rutter created both chances, first Barrow again being denied by Peat despite initially selling the keeper a wonderful dummy; then Harrod fired wastefully wide when also clean through.
Harrod passed up another chance to put the game to bed at the start of the second half, again shooting wide after fine work by Smalley, Medforth and Barrow had created the opportunity.
Manager Mack introduced Thompson and Stu Campbell on 58mins and the substitute striker announced his arrival in style. Not for the first time it was tidy approach play down the right that opened up the Hedon defence, Barrow eventually sliding the ball through for Thompson to fire under Peat for the decisive third goal.
The Hedon keeper then produced a top-class save to deny Milner after Thompson had held the ball up well but he was powerless to prevent a fourth goal on 76 minutes. Barrow linked with Nicholson down the right and when the ball found its way through, Thompson swept home.
Musgrove passed up the opportunity to make it five, after a surging run and cross by Smalley, before Rangers were offered small consolation from the penalty spot after Graham’s foul on Cooper. But even this was denied them when Appleyard easily saved Cooper’s penalty.
There was still time for John Batch to controversially see red after twice upsetting the referee and somewhat take the gloss of what had for him been another outstanding display at the heart of the Eastenders’ back four.
Hedon: D Peat, R Franks, D Smith, K Parkinson, S Brough, A O’Loughlin, M Sansam, A Cooper, D Thompson, A Parkinson, P Smith (Subs: P Tarafdar, C Granham, S Clough, M Dowd)
