Sub Langley sinks East End cup hopes
Hornsea Town 2 – 1 Easington United
FOR the second year running Hornsea Town ended the Eastenders’ hopes in the Grays Cup after a tight second round encounter at the Hollis Recreation Ground.
Town followed up last year’s 1-0 success with a 2-1 win this time; substitute Chris Langley, on from the 16th minute, proving his side’s match-winner with both goals.
Easington boss Dave Mackay-Dundas had no real complaints with the outcome but was bitterly disappointed that his side hadn’t managed to reach the performance levels shown in recent weeks. However, along with his Town counterpart John Bickenson, he was also critical of another poor refereeing performance by Mr. Simon Stevenson.
Both sides had cause for complaint over some erratic decision-making but the one that left most Easington supporters fuming came with the score at 1-1. As Rob Kamis bore down on the home goal with just the keeper to beat, the referee pulled play back to book a Town defender for something said and awarded Easington a free-kick on halfway. It was an error similar to that he’d made at Hutton Cranswick earlier in the season, which had cost Easington an equaliser. Once is unfortunate, twice is downright careless!
On a glorious spring-like afternoon, Easington felt they could have had a penalty when Danny Medforth appeared to be tripped as part of a frantic start in which they struck the woodwork twice in the first three minutes. Mike Nicholson latched onto Craig Smalley’s pass and beat Dexter with a lob that bounced back off the bar. In the ensuing scramble, Kamis saw his attempted cross deflected onto the post and from the rebound, Nicholson’s shot was blocked on the line.
Town immediately responded. Dean Jennings pounced on Milner’s skied attempted clearance but successive shots were blocked by desperate defending. Jennings then seized on an error by Medforth but having worked space across the box could only fire into Appleyard’s side-netting.
Back came Easington; Medforth’s free-kick picking out Andy Graham but after a good first touch, he scuffed his shot wide.
Town were then forced to replace the injured James Black with substitute Langley, while Easington were indebted to two excellent challenges from skipper Neil Rutter as Town again threatened.
Both sides had further chances before the break. Nicholson saw yet another effort blocked by Dexter on the line, while Medforth just failed to get enough contact after more excellent footwork by Kamis on the right; at the other end, John Mill planted a free header over the bar from just six yards out.
The half finished with Dexter getting down smartly to deny Medforth’s near post effort after Ian Barrow’s slide-rule pass had created the opening.
The Eastenders started the second half strongly only to fall behind to a real sucker punch five minutes in. Batch failed to deal with a ball into the box and from the resulting confusion, Langley managed to latch onto a knock through and beat Appleyard from close range.
Five minutes later Easington passed up what looked a glorious chance to equalise. Medforth’s right-wing corner found Graham free in the box but having lost the ball in the sun, the defender could only head over the top.
Musgrove made way for Harrod on the hour and a minute later the latter deservedly levelled matters. Graham’s fine ball out of defence was headed on by Kamis into the path of the sub who took a touch before beating Dexter from twelve yards, albeit with the aid of the slightest deflection.
The visitors now took control. Immediately from the restart, Rutter regained possession and fed Barrow to set up Kamis but, having cut inside, the striker screwed his shot wide of the near post. Medforth then put Kamis in again down the right and when Nicholson couldn’t convert the cross, the ball fell to Harrod but he delayed his shot allowing Town to scramble away for a corner. Then, just as Kamis appeared on course to score, came the referee’s aforementioned intervention.
Hornsea had offered little since their goal but Jennings sent out warning of what was to come when he struck a thumping 25-yard effort just wide of Appleyard’s left-hand upright. Two minutes later the hosts restored their lead. Appleyard totally air-kicked an attempted clearance, leaving Milner to scramble the ball away for a throw but, with Easington slow to reorganise, Jennings’ throw-in found its way to Langley who looped a header into the far corner. It proved the winner.
Luke Jeffery came on for the injured Medforth, slotting in at right back with Smalley pushed on, and the youngster enjoyed a promising cameo that included a couple of timely interceptions.
There was still time for the Eastenders to be denied after another amazing scramble. Awarded a free-kick on the left, which Kamis floated in, Batch headed back across goal for Rutter to seemingly apply the decisive touch. His header was somehow bundled away and both Harrod and Nicholson were denied by a stunning double-save from Dexter before Graham blasted the loose ball across the face of goal for a throw-in. With it went Easington’s last chance of forcing extra-time.
