Casuals hit for six Long Riston Reserves 6 – 1 Easington Utd Casuals
THE Casuals’ recent mini-revival came to a shuddering halt as promotion hopefuls Long Riston Reserves dished out a 6-1 hiding to Doug Clubley’s side. Despite fielding a team packed with experience (including debutant Kevin Brewer – back for another spell at the Farm at the tender age of 47!) and producing some fairly decent football going forward, the visitors had no answer to Riston’s livewire young strikers. By half-time the hosts led 3-1, Tom McLaughlin having scored Easington’s reply from close range following a low cross from the returning Matty Purse. Early in the second half came what many regarded as the game’s defining moment; McLaughlin again finding himself through on goal only for referee Roger Smith to give a contentious offside decision. From the resulting free-kick Riston broke forward and scored again to make it 4-1. Two further goals followed as the hosts repeated their convincing win at Ottringham back in October and things would have been worse had goalkeeper Chris Rawlings not saved a second half penalty. When sub Danny Campbell inadvertently blocked Matty Purse’s two late goal-bound efforts, the Casuals knew it wasn’t to be their day. Instead they could retire to the local hostelry to contemplate on whether – even without ‘Dooley’ Cousins – this was the oldest back four ever to pull on Easington United shirts??!!
