‘Ella’ of a way to mark Mack’s first year!
Westella & Willerby 1 – 3 Easington United
EASINGTON United manager Dave Mackay-Dundas celebrated his first year in charge by steering his side to their most impressive win of the season to date.
Goals from Ollie Musgrove, Andy Graham and Rob Kamis at The University helped inflict only the second defeat of the season on second-placed Westella & Willerby and lift the Eastenders to fifth place, within three points of their hosts.
The boss was full of praise for his rejuvenated side, which overcame the pre-match loss of strikers Paul Wilkinson (injured) and Steve Harrod (work), although he did express disappointment at the defending that led to Mike Bartlett’s sole reply for Westella on 65mins.
The aforementioned absentees led to two changes to the side that had won at Beverley a week earlier. Andy Graham returned from suspension to partner John Batch at the back (Neil Rutter being restored to his favoured midfield role) while Rob Kamis made his full debut up top in a 4-4-1-1 formation.
Westella’s last defeat had come in August and with Sculcoates away representing the East Riding in Lancashire, Dave Anderson’s side knew that a win could breathe life back into the HPL title race.
And it was the hosts who started strongest on a fine afternoon, although had Ian Barrow been able to get good connection on his header from a Danny Medforth free kick, Easington could have been a goal up inside the first minute.
Ella began to ask questions with their more direct approach and Matt Fyvie should have given them the lead but blazed over from six yards with the goal at his mercy.
The next two chances fell to Easington; Medforth curling a free kick just wide of the upright and then almost inadvertently breaking the deadlock when goalkeeper Nicklin’s attempted clearance rebounded back off his head and flew wide of the mark.
Along with fellow ex-Anlaby man Batch, Kamis was enjoying himself against his former team’s traditional rivals. With Medforth offering tireless support and the midfield gaining the upper hand, the Eastenders took control. Their reward came on 23mins.
Again Kamis did well, holding off two defenders before hitting a ball for Musgrove to chase down the channel. Defender Chris Plummer appeared favourite but when he under-hit his intended pass back to Nicklin, Musgrove nipped into curl home from a tight angle.
Kamis then turned smartly only to fire just wide before Westella hit back to force Easington onto the back foot as half-time approached. Twice they went close from set-pieces, first Graham being forced to hack away a goal-bound free kick before Kev Milner produced an even better goal-line clearance at a corner, the ball coming out to Owen Robinson whose return shot was turned away by Appleyard for another corner. This came to nothing and the Eastenders’ lead survived intact to the break.
Anderson made two half-time changes in a bid to turn things round and five minutes into the half he was forced to complete his subs when Tom Dent fell awkwardly in a challenge. Things were to get worse for him.
Having survived Ella’s expected lively start to the second half, Easington broke up-field to score the decisive second goal; Medforth’s right wing corner picking out Graham who struck the sweetest of volleys beyond Nicklin into the far top corner from fifteen yards out.
Buoyed by this, the Eastenders appeared capable of opening up their hosts at any opportunity but the hosts hit back to reduce arrears two minutes later. Graham was somewhat harshly adjudged to have fouled Fyvie on the right and the well-worked free kick caught the visitors napping, allowing Bartlett to sweep home from eight yards.
When injury forced Westella sub Joe Tomlinson off, reducing his side to ten men, Eastenders boss Mack introduced Stu Campbell to shore things up in midfield and, with ten minutes to go, the ‘killer’ third goal arrived. Musgrove found space on the left and when his cross was returned into the box by Barrow, Kamis was on hand to volley home his first goal for the club.
The goal was the new boy’s last act of an impressive debut and Barrow was also withdrawn soon after, allowing asst-mgr Walmsley and youngster Luke Jeffery a taste of the action. The pair almost combined for an “icing on the cake” fourth goal only for Jeffery’s touch to let him down after Walmsley had picked him out superbly. It didn’t matter – Easington had their third win in a row.
