Maccer marks 600th with a goal (and a card!)
Skirlaugh FC 3 – 3 Easington Utd Casuals
IAIN McNaught became the second member of the current Eastenders set-up to make his 600th appearance for the Club when leading them out at promotion hopefuls Skirlaugh.
And for an hour it appeared he might complete a perfect day, having headed his team into a deserved half-time lead. Arriving to meet Dave Clubley’s in-swinging corner, “Maccer” rolled back the years to bravely get in where it hurts, thumping the ball powerfully into the net while leaving two defenders on the deck. It was his 47th goal in Easington colours, some twenty years after his first!
Slightly disappointingly (or rather amusingly if you consider Iain’s “illustrious” career at The Farm) the player also marked the occasion with not the first yellow card he’s ever received, although in his defence this one was a rather needless one to give out by the not over-impressive match official.
The milestone man’s team were also forced to accept less than initially seemed on offer to them as Skirlaugh came storming back in an entertaining game at South Holderness School.
Once again, injuries and late withdrawals left manager Clubley relieved to see the Reserves game postponed due to a wet Low Farm pitch. This allowed him to field a starting eleven plus the recovering Dan Potts and emergency outfield sub ‘Ebo’ on the bench, the latter having made way for the return of Chris Rawlings in goal after nearly four months on the sidelines.
Easington started strongly and thoroughly deserved their half-time lead. Indeed they could have been out of sight early in the second half but for the bar and fine save that denied Barnett further goals.
Skirlaugh then hit back when one of their number waltzed through several tackles before beating Rawlings and although Clubley got back to clear the first shot, the rebound was forced home for 1-1.
The hosts then took the lead from the penalty spot after ‘Biff’ McNaught was somewhat harshly adjudged to have handled.
McNaught soon got the chance to even things out and did so in style, linking with Glenn Ratcliffe on halfway before racing clear to coolly beat the goalkeeper from 20 yards.
Potts then came on for Findley and looked to have won the game with his first goal for the club, a fine far post finish after the Skirlaugh keeper had done well to beat out Ratcliffe’s strike.
Back came the hosts, though, and levelled at 3-3 with a shot that ballooned over Rawlings courtesy of a wicked deflection and it was only thanks to a fine save by the returning keeper that the Casuals were not cruelly denied a point.
Easington: C Rawlings, D Dawson, B Fisk, M Hooley, I McNaught, A McNaught, M Findley (D Potts), M Richardson, G Ratcliffe, A Barnett, D Clubley (Sub not used: I Thurkettle)
