Mike’s strike topples Town
Beverley Town 0 – 1 Easington United
EASINGTON United maintained contact with the top six in the HPL Premier Division thanks to Mike Nicholson’s ninth goal of the season at Norwood Park.
Just before the half-hour mark, the midfielder rifled home from 25 yards to clinch the three points that his side’s efforts just about deserved.
Although not being enough to improve their current placing of seventh, the result moved Easington level on points with the two teams directly above them and to within one of North Ferriby and Hornsea Town. Indeed a win this weekend away at second-placed Westella would close that particular gap to just three points.
Manager Mackay-Dundas, who later described his team’s performance as “solid and professional”, was forced into two changes to the starting line-up that had seen off Hedon United a week before. Skipper Neil Rutter replaced the injured Stuart Campbell at centre-half, with Ollie Musgrove gaining the vacant starting place in midfield. Meanwhile, injury to Jamie Cousins allowed another youngster, Luke Jeffery, chance of a place on the bench where he was joined by latest addition to the squad, Rob Kamis.
The 28-year-old midfielder/striker signed prior to kick-off having been tracked by manager Mack since the demise of Anlaby United.
In a game of few chances, played on a heavy pitch and in difficult conditions (blustery wind followed by showers of rain and hail) the visitors showed enough discipline and control to just about edge matters against well-drilled opponents.
And victory would have been somewhat more emphatic had Danny Medforth and Paul Wilkinson not been denied near the end after both had been put clear by fine Kamis passes.
While Medforth was perhaps guilty of taking the wrong option when trying to go round Cockin, Wilkinson was illegally blocked off by him, resulting in a red card to the goalkeeper on 85mins.
At the other end, Kevin Appleyard was in confident form, showing good handling and twice getting down to save from Town set-pieces. Aside from these, though, and a couple of optimistic penalty shouts Town never really looked threatening.
In addition, the locals' back four was well-marshalled by the impressive John Batch and there were other pleasing performances from goal scorer Nicholson and left-sided duo Milner and Musgrove. Meanwhile, the appearance of subs Kamis and youngster Jeffery in the second half took the tally of Eastenders HPL debutants thus far this season to a full starting eleven!
