Clubley hat-trick gives Casuals lift-off!
Withernsea 3rds 2 – 4 Easington Utd Casuals
WHEN somebody as committed to his team’s cause as Mr. Andrew Beedham tells you just how deserving of victory your side is, then there’s little wonder that Casuals boss Doug Clubley was a happy man last Saturday.
He’d just seen his injury-hit Casuals come from behind to gain a thoroughly deserved second league win of the season. The fact that it came at local rivals Withernsea and enabled the Casuals to move off the bottom of the table at the expense of their opponents was a bonus!
With the Purse brothers injured, Hurren Afghan-bound, Swaby, Redman and Ward working, and Biglin holidaying, the Casuals took Tom McLaughlin off the Reserves in order to make up a starting eleven.
But at least the presence of Darren Dawson, Mike Hooley and ‘Dooley’ Cousins, all back from injury and illness, alongside asst-boss ‘Maccer’ in a veteran back four (apologies Daws!) gave the Casuals a solid basis from which to work.
In the event, they proceeded to play some of their best football of the season, helped by a hard-working display from the aforementioned McLaughlin (the youngster showing the benefit of half a season at a higher level), the height of Glenn Ratcliffe (back after his HPL ‘sojourn’ with Hedon United), fluid movement throughout the side going forward, good hold up play and Rich Clubley’s raw enthusiasm up front, which was to reap dividends against a suspect Seasiders’ defence.
However, for 45 minutes it looked as if we were in for a repeat of Howden Town as numerous chances came and went: Ratcliffe headed against the bar from a Dave Clubley corner; Clubbers himself cut in from the left and curled a shot against the bar before screwing another effort wide; Matty Findley twice fired over from pull backs; and McLaughlin, Chris Smith and Rich Clubley all passed up half-chances or shooting opportunities.
Having had no luck in front of goal, the locals were then punished when Dawson conceded a penalty, which Andy Neal dispatched, although ‘Ebo’ so nearly kept it out.
The second half continued to be dominated by the boys in blue and Easington deservedly levelled matters when Findley's long throw was flicked on by Ratcliffe and Rich Clubley poked the ball home from close range.
There was no turning back now. Clubley bagged his and his team’s second, turning and shooting home from close range after the Seasiders’ defence failed to deal with a cross.
The youngster then played a big part in making it 3-1; holding the ball up well before teeing up Findley to fire home from 10 yards.
Withernsea were given a whiff of a comeback when poor defending allowed a cross/shot to go in from an acute angle but the points were secured when Clubley combined with Ratcliffe before sliding the ball past the advancing keeper for a fine hat-trick.
In addition, the other Clubley again struck the bar and Smith placed a couple of headers wide as well as having a contender for “miss of the season” when falling over in the mud in front of an open goal after the keeper’s parry of a Ratcliffe shot had come out to him!
Easington: I Thurkettle, D Dawson, S Cousins, T McLaughlin, I McNaught, M Hooley, D Clubley, G Ratcliffe, R Clubley, C Smith, M Findley
