Howden “horror show” not quite the full story
Howden Town 7 – 0 Easington Utd Casuals
DUE to illness, Casuals manager Doug Clubley wasn’t at Howden to witness his side’s latest disappointing defeat – he’s now missed the last two matches, in which his beleaguered side have conceded sixteen goals and scored none!
However, while the Patrington Stanley game was the Casuals’ lowest point of the season, this defeat wasn’t quite as depressing despite the emphatic sounding scoreline.
Aside from a sticky opening 10mins, the locals – bolstered by several late recruits from higher up the pecking order to cover a growing absent list – totally dominated first half events to such effect that the Town manager admitted he would have had no complaints had his side come off “three to four goals” down.
Both Rich Clubley and ‘Bezza’ Barnett saw goal-bound efforts stick in the waterlogged goalmouth, while the Casuals also had two strong penalty appeals waved away and the Howden goalkeeper escaped any punishment for deliberate handball outside the box.
Having dominated matters to such an extent, the Casuals then undid all their fine work by conceding a couple of quick goals after the break.
“After that we just did not compete”, said asst-manager Iain McNaught who labelled the performances of the aforementioned late recruits (with the exception of Luke Jeffery and the hard-working Barnett) as “disappointing”.
In addition, following a bit of a nightmare at Patrington, goalkeeper “Ebo” Thurkettle was absolved of blame for all but one goal this time round.
McNaught reserved some criticism for the referee – particularly before the break – although his main regret was that “we let ourselves down in the second half”.
Easington: I Thurkettle, L Jeffery, B Fisk, P Brown, D Campbell, I McNaught, D Clubley (A McNaught), M Findley (S Campbell), J Purse (M Purse), R Clubley, A Barnett
