Parker plots another Easington downfall
Easington United Reserves 1 – 4 Sculcoates Amateurs Reserves
USUALLY the man behind so many first team wins in meetings between these two sides, Darren Parker was on hand to engineer only Sculcoates Reserves’ second league win of the season and in the process ensure the locals go into the New Year with one eye cast firmly over their shoulders.
For the fourth game running the Eastenders conceded a minimum four goals, which is not the basis for any kind of positive result – although, ironically, it could have still produced a draw had they also not passed up several golden chances of their own.
Strikers Darren Thompson and Craig Foster both missed good opportunities, several of which came at crucial times of the game. In the event, a first half penalty from the latter was enough to give rise to hopes of a comeback at 1-2.
These hopes were dashed when the aforementioned Parker – at the hub of most of Scully’s moves – glided past a couple of defenders before striking a superb shot from 20 yards.
A fourth goal direct from a controversially awarded free kick then sealed matters, although even then the Stiffs were left ruing missed opportunities.
Their cause was also not helped by the absence of Luke Smith (allowing Trevor Biglin a rare and eleventh hour return to the Reserves fold at sub), a hamstring injury to Ricky Biglin and illness that forced Tom McLaughlin off the field at half-time. This latter withdrawal gave striker Rich Clubley a first taste of Premier Division football and his performance earned praise from asst-manager McNaught.
However, it’s his team’s efforts at the other end of the pitch that are giving him most cause for concern. Both the visitors’ first goals were the by-product of poor defending and goalkeeping errors.
Despite lack of options, it’s a situation that he and returning manager John Clarke must address ahead of the next game at bottom club FC Ridings on 6 January. With a trip to fellow strugglers Skidby following a week later, the locals must look to put some breathing space between themselves and the four teams beneath them.
On the latest evidence, they’re quite capable of producing good enough football but the back door needs well and truly bolting shut!
Easington: S Eldon, L Jeffery, B Fisk (T Biglin), S Campbell, D Campbell, A McNaught, T McLaughlin (R Clubley), R Biglin (P Brown), C Foster, D Thompson, A Barnett
