Injury-hit Eastenders put to the sword
Sculcoates Amateurs 6 – 1 Easington United
MANAGER Dave Mackay-Dundas refused to use a crippling injury list as an excuse for his Easington side’s second thumping of the season by HPL leaders Sculcoates Amateurs at the Hull & ER Sports Ground.
Despite a flurry of late additions to an already sizeable absent list, manager Mack was more concerned with what he termed his side’s “lack of application” on the day.
He said, “Of course the injuries didn’t help but we still had enough quality on the park to have got something from this game. I can’t fault the lads’ effort because I certainly think they gave it their all but their lack of application was the biggest disappointment.
“I said last weekend that a better team than Pocklington would have punished our lapses and today Scully showed just what I meant.”
In addition to Dan Potts’ failure to recover from injury, the Eastenders lost Paul Wilkinson and Steve Harrod on the morning of the game, while both new signings, Jamie Heard and Mark Hazel, were absent.
In addition, Ian Barrow played despite struggling with a stomach bug, Kevin Milner started his first game after injury and skipper Neil Rutter finished up completing his first ninety minutes of HPL football for the season, having originally been named as one of four subs!
The last minute reshuffle saw Barrow employed up front with Rutter given the holding role in midfield, Milner and Craig Smalley (back after suspension) restored to the full back berths and Adam Metcalf pushed on down the right. Mark Richardson was recalled to the bench alongside Jamie Cousins and the half-fit manager.
Sculcoates started as if they meant to repeat October’s 7-2 ER Senior Cup win and Ricky Field’s surging run brought the first save out of Appleyard inside the opening minute.
However, having weathered this and a couple of other promising home moves, Easington gradually came into things although Appleyard had to fling himself to his left on 20mins to keep out Drayton’s stinging 25-yarder.
A minute later, the goalkeeper was powerless as Drayton took advantage of a favourable bounce in the box to curl the ball home.
The Eastenders levelled matters within two minutes. The home defence failed to deal with Milner’s pass and Medforth showed great persistence to go round Sowersby and tuck the ball away despite the best efforts of Dave White on the line.
A minute later the Eastenders should have taken the lead; Rutter’s powerful header from midfield setting Barrow clear but with time on his side the striker slid the ball agonisingly wide of the upright.
The significance of the miss came sixty seconds later when Lee Benham put Tony Scruton through and he fired through Appleyard’s legs for 2-1.
Things could have been worse just another minute later when Appleyard saved well to deny Field as the Easington back four was again ripped apart.
And the visitors’ hopes of salvaging something from the day were knocked further back on 33mins. Sowersby’s long clearance from goal somehow eluded three defenders, allowing Mark Smith to score Scully’s third with a clever lob over Appleyard.
If manager Mack can take anything from the day, it’s from the way his side dominated the opening fifteen minutes of the second half.
Both Musgrove and Smalley made fine runs to the byline before producing quality crosses that should have yielded more, and Barrow planted a free header over the top from a Medforth corner when it appeared easier to score.
For the second time in the match, Sculcoates seized on their good fortune at one end to punish their opponents at the other. More direct approach play, coupled with poor defending, allowed Drayton to poach his second of the game on 57mins.
On the hour the hosts made a double switch, while Milner’s ankle finally forced his retirement for Easington and yet more reshuffling. Five minutes later it was 5-1; Field providing the service for Drayton to complete his hat-trick.
Richardson replaced Medforth immediately following the goal but it was Scully’s next change that proved significant as youngster Sam Hyde, on for the outstanding Field, completed the scoring on 72 minutes.
Andy Graham was unlucky with a strong penalty claim as the Eastenders tried to glean some consolation from the game, while at the other end Appleyard prevented further punishment with two outstanding saves, one from Drayton that was little short of amazing.
At the final whistle several members of the home party suggested the result had been harsh on the locals. Manager Mack and assistant Walmsley gave short shrift to this view, suggesting instead that if improvements in the basics aren’t made – and quickly – a first HPL derby defeat by Withernsea is very much on the cards.
