Mack wants improvement on winning return
Easington United 4 – 1 Pocklington Town
EASINGTON United returned to winning ways with a victory over Pocklington Town that wasn’t quite as impressive as the scoreline suggests.
For while during the first 45 minutes, certainly, the Eastenders were well worth their two-goal advantage, their inability to build on this after the break left manager Mack frustrated.
He said, “I’m really annoyed by our second half performance. We lacked fluency and were a bit too laid back, thinking the job was done. A quality team would hurt us in such situations.
“Having said that I thought we were very good in the first half and could have come off at the break five or six goals to the good.”
The Eastenders included two new signings in their squad. Former Hull City, Chester and Morecambe player Jamie Heard lined up at left back, while RAF rep Mark Hazel was named among the subs.
Meanwhile, Ollie Musgrove came into midfield in place of the injured Dan Potts and his inclusion, along with that of Adam Metcalf and Jamie Cousins, again provided evidence of the progress of good Holderness youngsters through the ranks.
While Hazel (signed specifically to cover the current crop of injuries and absentees throughout the squad) was only given a brief cameo near the end, Heard’s debut left most supporters buzzing – although even he didn’t escape his manager’s post-match criticism.
“Yeah Jamie did well and showed glimpses of the sort of quality you’d expect from someone with his background. But even he was guilty of letting standards slip after the break”, said Mack.
On another glorious afternoon for football and a sticky surface made playable only by intense work on Saturday morning, Easington gained the perfect start when Metcalf’s long clearance put Ian Barrow in on a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, from which he made no mistake.
Chances continued to come and go with three of the better ones originating from the boot of Heard.
First his fantastic cross-field pass put Barrow in with a great chance of goal number two, only for the winger to fluff it; then his ball to Steve Harrod was cleverly chested into the path of Paul Wilkinson but the striker shot straight at goalkeeper Kunkel; and a third peach of a pass, this time down the line to Wilks saw him cut inside before again firing straight at the keeper.
Although Rob Gibson’s deflected shot on 20mins drew parity for Pock at 1-1, Easington were not made to pay for their profligacy.
On 28mins, Wilkinson latched onto a flick-on to beat Kunkel from 6 yards out.
Seven minutes later it was 3-1, a corner being cleared as far as man of the match Mike Nicholson who beat a defender before drilling home inside the far post.
Aside from Gibson’s goal, Kev Appleyard had remained largely untroubled in the Eastenders’ net. It was a different story after the interval.
The locals’ lack of urgency and Town’s improved showing saw Appleyard called into action via two excellent saves, one of which resulted in him sustaining an injury that eventually forced him off.
Danny Medforth took over the goalkeeping duties for the final stages and he himself made one fine stop when “cleaning everything up” during another Town attack.
By this time, though, the points were safe – Musgrove having taken Wilkinson’s pass in his stride before beating Kunkel at the second attempt for 4-1 on 75mins.
