Same old story for Clubley’s Casuals
Easington Utd Casuals 1 – 2 Molescroft Rangers Res
A second successive defeat for the Casuals, at former ‘home’ Humbleton, and as with the previous week’s reverse against Holme, one they didn’t really deserve.
More withdrawals and call-ups left manager Clubley reshuffling his dwindling pack just an hour before kick-off; Chris Smith coming in for his first start in two months in place of the absent Stow and Joni Purse returning to the squad after a couple of weeks away.
The visitors, only slightly better placed in Division 4 at start of play, began in even more disorganized fashion – a man short after one of their number turned up at Low Farm!
The visitors were also faced with the low sun in their eyes first half but the Casuals failed to capitalise. There were two or three occasions when good moves resulted in crosses that just eluded the arriving strikers and, after this initial burst, things evened out slightly when Rangers’ eleventh man arrived.
Still, Easington created the better chances and they continued to make use of the sun with Iain McNaught’s long free–kick into the box enabling Smith to get close enough to unsight the keeper with Dave Clubley sticking away the rebound.
Further chances came and went, Matty Purse striking the bar and putting another one over when it appeared easier to score, while ‘Macca’ thumped a header just over the bar from a whipped-in corner.
These missed chances came back to bite the locals when Molescroft’s solitary hard-working forward was forced away from goal by Trev Biglin but somehow wrapped his foot around the bouncing ball and found the far top-corner of Ebo’s net (either extremely good or pretty lucky!).
The visitors then dominated the first 15 of the second half as the locals struggled to find any rhythm but, gradually, they got back into the game and, in between a few long range efforts, Rich Clubley used his strength and pace to force a one-on-one with the keeper but couldn’t keep his shot down.
Johnny Purse came on and announced his arrival with two excellent cross-field passes that nearly saw the younger Purse go through on goal.
In the last quarter, a throw-in to the middle of the park from Dave Clubley, playing in the unaccustomed role of full-back following Ward’s withdrawal with a calf strain, saw Matty Findley dispossessed and the visiting midfielder went past Rutter before unleashing a shot from 30 yards straight in to the top corner.
Easington: I Thurkettle, S Ward (J Purse), T Biglin, M Hooley, I McNaught, N Rutter, D Clubley, M Findley, R Clubley, C Smith, M Purse
