Holme provides no end to away day blues
Holme Rovers Reserves 3 – 1 Easington Utd Casuals
THE Eastenders Casuals went down to their sixth defeat of the campaign at Holme Rovers Reserves in a game in which they did more than enough to earn some reward.
Dominating matters territorially, Doug Clubley’s side – again much-changed due to call-ups and absences elsewhere – just couldn’t make their superiority count, particularly before the break when their football was on a different level to that of their hosts.
Easington posed all sorts of problems throughout the game, particularly at set-pieces, with McNaught, Rutter and Hooley offering “something different” by way of threat. But, even with half-a-dozen goalmouth scrambles coming as a result, the Holme goal survived; that is aside from one second half corner that was only cleared as far as Hooley who lashed home from 10 minutes.
That goal levelled matters – Rovers having taken an early lead – but within minutes the hosts restored their advantage.
Hooley’s back-pass to Thurkettle only resulted in the goalkeeper hitting the ball straight at the Holme striker who made no mistake.
Still the Casuals always appeared capable of getting something out of the game. Rich Clubley had fired just over before the break and then completely “air kicked” another presentable chance afterwards.
However, the best opportunity fell to Rutter but he couldn’t keep his far post volley down from a Hooley free kick.
The club captain was then to play an inadvertent role in Rovers’ killer third goal, deflecting the striker’s shot past the unfortunate Thurkettle for 3-1 as Easington were caught chasing the equaliser.
Despite plenty of effort and one amazing goalmouth scramble at the end, the locals were forced to accept their fourth reverse in as many away games.
Easington: I Thurkettle, S Ward, T Biglin, M Hooley, I McNaught, N Rutter, J Stow (C Smith), M Findley, R Clubley, D Clubley, M Purse
