Casuals end Riston’s run
Harold Robinson Cup Round 2
Long Riston Reserves 5 – 6 Easington Utd Casuals
(Played at Easington)
THE recent transformation in the Casuals’ form was perfectly illustrated by a second successive win.
Just over a month ago, Long Riston Reserves strolled past their opponents 5-0 as part of a four-match unblemished start to the season. Their accompanying arrogance on the day only added to the Casuals’ disappointment and made Saturday’s result taste all the sweeter as that same Riston side were sent packing from Low Farm, having been deservedly dumped out of the league cup.
In a pulsating game, switched from Riston’s waterlogged Main Street ground to Easington, the locals always held the upper hand before surviving the latest of scares to progress.
Their success was mirrored personally by club captain Neil Rutter who completed his first outfield ninety minutes of the season and capped it with a goal – one of six separate scorers for a Casuals side that’s starting to show a handy mix of youth and experience.
Despite the absence of the injured Dooley Cousins, Darren Dawson, Mike Hooley and Chris Smith plus the unavailability of Tom McLaughlin and Steve Ward, manager Clubley still had options galore.
Rutter came in alongside Brett Fisk at the heart of the back four, Matty Purse returned to midfield and returning asst-mgr Iain McNaught and Joni Purse were back in the squad via the bench.
The end-to-end tone was set early when ‘man of the match’ Rich Clubley broke free down the right and crossed for the hard-working ‘Bezza’ Barnett to open the scoring.
Easington joy was short-lived – a shot taking a wicked deflection and looping over Thurkettle for 1-1.
Back came Easington; Matty Purse swinging over an excellent deep cross, which found its way via Dave Clubley to Adam Swaby and was duly dispatched from 12 yards.
Fine approach play was again in evidence on the Casuals’ third; Luke Jeffery combining with Rich Clubley before supplying the cross from which Matty Purse crashed home on the volley.
3-2 came courtesy of a cross missed by its intended target but in off the unfortunate Dave Clubley.
‘Bezza’ then passed up a great chance to make it 4-2 and Dave Hurren struck the bar with a free kick before Barnett atoned for his miss by setting up Rich Clubley for the Casuals’ fourth; only for another deflected effort, this time from a free-kick, to again bring Riston back in it.
The locals’ reopened their two-goal gap when Rutter met Matty Purse’s in-swinging corner but an excellent Riston strike from distance made it 5-4.
In a frantic finish, the younger Purse again turned provider for Dave Clubley to fire home the sixth but when the scorer then conceded a penalty, Riston provided some late consternation before victory was assured.
Easington: I Thurkettle, L Jeffery, D Hurren (T Biglin), A Swaby, N Rutter, B Fisk, D Clubley, M Findley, R Clubley, A Barnett, M Purse (J Purse) (sub not used: I McNaught)
