Wilkinson’s return forces the issue
Easington United 4 – 0 Barton Town OB Reserves
PAUL Wilkinson came off the bench to help inspire Easington United to their second 4-0 success in the last three games.
The striker, whose pre-season departure from the Club was somewhat tainted, returned to play a part in all four of the Eastenders’ second half goals.
Not that this was by any means a one-man effort. In a match dominated by a strong wind blowing straight down the ground, Easington controlled things well in the first half before cutting loose afterwards when they enjoyed the elements at their backs.
In addition to Wilks’ return, manager Mack made just the one change to his squad from the side that had performed so well at North Ferriby; asst-mgr Dave Walmsley replacing Mark Richardson on the bench.
A solid opening by the home side was spoilt only by the poor quality of the final ball, a recurring fault as the half progressed.
However, despite having the wind at their backs, Barton offered even less going forward and it was the Eastenders who enjoyed the few moments of real goalmouth action.
On 12 minutes Ian Barrow made space only to shoot straight at goalkeeper Mike Burley and four minutes later Danny Medforth headed straight at him from Steve Harrod’s quality cross.
Some of the locals’ play was a joy to watch, a fact illustrated superbly on 20mins when, following a Barton foray, a swift counter-attack saw the ball switched between Nicholson, Potts and Medforth to Harrod whose effort was diverted for a corner.
On 35mins Medforth could only steer Andy Graham’s pass into the side-netting before the Eastenders passed up their best opening just before half-time; Nicholson staying on his feet following a “foul” in the box only to drag his shot agonisingly wide of the far post.
The South Bank side, restricted to set-pieces as their main source of threat in the first half, opened the second period strongly but it was Easington who again created the better openings. Craig Smalley was just off-target with one long-range effort, while skipper Andy Graham was denied by Burley.
On 58mins, Wilkinson replaced the hard-working Musgrove and the “Farm Faithful” didn’t have long to wait for him to make an impact, although it was Medforth who had the next couple of opportunities; drilling one 30-yarder just wide before passing up what appeared to be a golden chance after the visitors’ offside trap had been caught out by Batch’s free kick.
On 64mins, Wilkinson latched onto Nicholson’s flick and teed up Barrow for the first goal; enough to convince most people that Barton’s hopes of a point were doomed to failure.
The striker then capped his return to the Farm when getting a toe-end to Medforth’s right wing corner on 73mins, before turning provider again two minutes later by setting up Nicholson’s fifth of the season.
Two minutes later it was 4-0. Chris Senior’s free-kick found Wilkinson whose volley was only diverted by Burley into the path of Steve Harrod.
The scoreline could have been even more emphatic and had the locals not fallen victim to further inconsistency in use of the “advantage” rule, Senior would have been celebrating a stunner from 25 yards.
As it was, they were left to reflect on their third fine performance in as many weeks and one that should put them in good heart ahead of the forthcoming back-to-back local derbies against the two Hedon sides.
