Thommo to the “four” in Reserves romp
Reckitts AFC Reserves 0 – 5 Easington Utd Reserves
ON another miserable day for the senior squad, the Reserves provided a much-needed bright spot for the club with an excellent win over their Reckitts counterparts at Hull University.
The day was a personal triumph for youngster Darren Thompson whose pace caused the home defence problems all game and which helped yield him four goals.
Veteran duo Gary Wheeldon and Paul Knight particularly struggled, with the latter resorting to some fairly unsavoury stuff in order to try and stem the flow – it didn’t work.
Manager John Clarke described his side’s win as “a really good team performance” and, with players still to come back, must hope they can build on it in the back-to-back home games to come.
With Steve Eldon and Danny Medforth on first team duty, Ricky Biglin away and Swaby and ‘Bezza’ given a run with the Casuals, Clarke was forced into several changes from the side that had done creditably at North Cave.
In the event, “Nige The Cat” Rutter was given the gloves (having been ruled out of further outfield action for the foreseeable future following his latest comeback attempt a week previous). Mike Hooley gained a start at left back, Chris Senior dropped in alongside Tom McLaughlin in midfield and the returning Luke Smith partnered Thompson up front.
Pasha Brown and the reluctant boss formed the bench, following ‘Biff’ McNaught and Darren Dawson’s failure to overcome injury.
‘Thommo’ set the Stiffs on their way on 13mins. Mike Hooley’s free kick picking him out unmarked and a stylish finish made it 1-0.
Despite plenty of possession, Reckitts were finding it hard to make inroads with Daniel Campbell doing a sterling job on veteran striker Mark Tennison.
On 27mins it was 2-0,a good move down the right culminating in Smith finding Thompson who side-footed home.
This second goal stung the home side into life and Rutter was forced into one superb save to preserve Easington’s advantage.
With the next goal crucial, thankfully it came the Stiffs’ way; Luke Smith racing clear only to brought down by the keeper but, with the ball rolling free to Adam Metcalf who slotted home, the referee sensibly applied the advantage.
Reckitts were still enjoying the lion’s share of possession but had no answer to Easington’s quick counter-thrusts and Thompson added two more quality goals to complete a very satisfying day both for him and his team.
Easington: N Rutter, L Jeffery, M Hooley, C Senior, C Foster, D Campbell, A Metcalf, T McLaughlin (P Brown), L Smith, D Thomson, J Cousins
