Rutter’s return can’t reverse Casuals’ slump Easington Utd Casuals 0 – 5 Long Riston Reserves
The return of Neil Rutter provided one of few bright spots in a third successive defeat for Doug Clubley’s Casuals side last weekend. The Eastenders’ club captain completed an hour on his first outing since damaging knee ligaments in the opening pre-season friendly of the season against North Ferriby. Only time will tell whether it proves the start of a road to full recovery or, simply, another false dawn. Unfortunately, even Rutter’s return couldn’t help stem the run of reversals, as a confident Riston Reserves maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign; two first half goals being followed by three more after the break. In addition to Rutter, manager Clubley fielded two new faces in Steve Redman and Chris Smith but was once again let down by absentees. Besides Dave Hurren (work) and Jodi Stow (injured), Clubley lost Joni Purse to work commitments and Luke Hobson for reasons that I don’t think he’d want publicising! Smith’s debut performance hinted at the “veteran” being a welcome addition to the squad but Clubley will be desperate for more competition for places if the positives from last season are not to be frittered away.
Easington: I Thurkettle, S Ward, S Cousins, B Fisk, I McNaught, S Redman, M Findley, N Rutter (C Smith), D Clubley, R Clubley, M Purse
